Effective diet? Dont eat!

The eating nothing diet is stupid as ****

What do you think you are, some Buddihst monk or something? Trying to reach a higher state of consciousness by depraving yourself? Why don't you try rice and beans.

[EDITED by YogSothoth to erase a bunch of anti-american anti-consumerism anti-McDoogles propoganda which was likely to fuel undue hatred upon my good self]

It's true that you shouldn't starve yourself since your body goes into energy-saving mode after few days, and also lot of that weight that you lose is going to be water and muscle. This is how all the "eat just celery and drop 10lbs in 10 days" diets seem effective but the weight comes back just as quick when you return to regular eating - your eating needs to be in good form BEFORE you start dieting.

This is also why you need to go to gym on regular basis - besides, gym has so many additional benefits for anyone who's trying to lose weight and look better, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't do it.

Most professional fat-losers eg. the bodybuilders who go on pre-contest diets to make the muscles stand out better, recommend about -500kcal diet for most effective weight loss. What this means is eating a bit less than your need and moving a bit more. The changes don't need to be huge, -500 means 25-30mins of light exercise combined with half a plate at dinner each day, as long as you are not eating anything extra.

Of course the crucial part of this plan is regular exercise and checking your eating habits - if your eating is decent and you get regular exercise, you are bound to lose extra fat at some point. Fancy eat-less diets are just to kick a few quick pounds once or twice a year.

Starving yourself will cause you to lost weight. Problem is, when you begin to eat normally again (even a restricted diet) you'll get fat again. Your metabolism slows down when you stop eating because it thinks you are starving. When you resume a normal eating pattern, your metabolism is still running at such a slow rate that your body stores fat like crazy until it's adjusted to a normal food intake. Not to mention the other health risks you expose yourself to when you starve yourself.

EDIT: I see everyone else has also tried to warn you too.

Also, why Bale did it in the Machinist was because his character was supposed to look "third world skinny", not healthy. That's exactly what you are going to look like, except that it's even easier to lose muscle than fat.

Portion control was they key for me getting healthy. I do not eat any portion of food that will not fit in the palm of my hand. I do not consider myself on any kind of diet, I just use common sense while eating.

Portion control and one avoiding all those late night dinner trips after the gig. The trouble now is I'm playing in a band that does a lot of out of town gigs where we all drive to gether and those guys LOVE dinners. It's hard sitting there having toast will everyone else is having steak and egg omlettes.

YAY for vegans. I'm a vegetarian so I know all about protein and milk and the whole scare. I'm glad your vegan because vegans usually know more than everyone else about nutrition. I think it's just that veg*ns in general are more open and accepting and want to learn more. Where as damned meat eaters won't hear a word against how they were brought up.

mmmm, wonder how you'd taste fried?

Should chime in here and say that my little experiment basically failed. Yes, portion size is very important. But you have to eat *enough* calories otherwise your body thinks its starving and you end up not losing the weight. Its better to eat 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day rather than 3 large ones.

So while portion size is an important factor, exercise is key. I hate exercise!

The whole thing is more about self-discipline more than anything.

(thus I'm still 220LBS!)

a lot of people in the "third world" probably eat better than a lot of you, refugee camps notwithstanding...

also, as far as eating nothing: see karen carpenter. died of heart failure after she tried to regulate her eating habits.
