"Homeland Security" - call it what it really is: Martial Law.

So you like 9/11 morning type freedom rather than nasty 'ol Homeland Security type martial law?

Bet you might have felt a bit different if you were in the top floors of the north tower that morning instead of at your keyboard in your non-burning residence.

It does indeed. I never claimed the people who make these policies are all-wise. Just calling for a little perspective and realism.

Realpolitik is neither immoral or amoral. It means leaders taking the responsibility to make the best decisions they can with the realities they have to work with, rather than pursuing quixotic crusades on the basis of ideology (including good, upright democratic ideology) that will end up doing more harm than good to actual people.
Unfortunately, the choice is often not that. We make decisions in the name of realpolitik that protect the US' economic or security interests (or so we think) that end up doing real harm to people and radicalizing the opposition--and also end up harming our security interests in the long run.

so there i was reading up thru the first half of page 8 thinking, "wow, this thread has stayed civil and interesting and open. more power to us."

there is no reason not to ignore trolling posts. ;)

i would like to point out that there are many people in this world who have serious problems with the u.s. government and its past/present policies, but understand that u.s. citizens are not just reflections of their government. and a lot of people would gladly take the "bad with the good" given a chance to become citizens. its as if they are complex individuals who can't just be painted with a broad brush or something!
