Double Bass ehrlund contact pu-mike

...and there are other pre-amps available, what have "we" experimented with and how did it go?

getting ready for a gig the other night i tried out the F-Deck with the Ehrlund and it did not work well. the Ehrlund preamp is recommended and maybe there is a good reason for that. but if there is another preamp that works well with it, that would be useful to know...

Btw, TroyK, if you order direct from Ehrlund both the pickup and the preamp were included at the price mentioned...

So, I'm getting frustrated with trying to buy one of these. it seems the pre-amp is required, but not directly available through Front End and I don't see it on the site of the German reseller (how can they sell it without the pre-amp if it won't work?)

I decided to just order direct from Ehrlund, but I don't see a "buy" option on his site now. "Maybe" other pre-amps will enable it, but apparently not all, so it's not as though I can pick up something else and be confident that I'll have a functioning system in the end. I'm unclear about the all-in price of mic and pre-amp, assuming I can find a way to buy one.

I suppose I can "contact" him and ask, but sheesh. Am I missing something obvious?

To buy directly from Ehrlund Microphones, I had to email Göran at [email protected].

I have been in contact with him this week, and these are the prices he quoted me for "Customers Outside of the EU". (I guess I should point out that I can't speak for him, of course. These were prices he gave me as of last week.)

(SEK is Swedish Krona)

Pickup and Preamp: 2800 SEK
Pickup only: 2000 SEK
Preamp only: 1200 SEK

The cost in US$ is a moving target, of course. As of 8pm today, I get:

2800 SEK = $420
2000 SEK = $300
1200 SEK = $180

The prices do not include shipping. You can pay him with Paypal.

I bought just the preamp from him this week (I had already purchased the pickup from a US distributor earlier this summer), through Paypal, and it was painless. You must specify an international payment, choose SEKs, etc.

He is a really nice guy, easy to deal with. He'll send you an invoice with the Paypal account, etc. You just have to get an email conversation going . . .

Mine was 3000 SEK for both the P/U and preamp including shipping to US but we had agreed on a price 2 months ago. Remember also, the FOREX converters you see online DON'T include the "spread" your bank or PayPal will use when calculating the currency conversion (which has nothing to do with the daily fluctuations in relative currency rates).

And yes, you have to email Goran Ehrlund to buy the units--there is no "buy" form on his website.

When Goran quoted me the cost of the preamp last week the price for the preamp and pickup was $418.00 plus 15.00 to ship for a total of $433.00. If you bought the pickup in the U.S. it's $263.00. The pre amp alone from Ehrlund is $180.00 plus $15.00 shipping. So buying the pickup stateside and then buying the preamp from Ehrlund actually costs more since it's $459.00 as the current exchange rate is favorable.

I liked the idea of this pickup better when I thought it was $250 and I could use whatever pre-amp I wanted. There are a couple in our classifieds right now for $50 and the Fdeck is always about $50, which would bring the whole thing in at around $300 vs $450 with shipping and exchange. But, we don't think it works without it's own pre-amp now huh?

Also, I've always wanted as few as possible failure points. A preamp, it's battery and the wires to and from it are all failure points, but if any and all of those things can be replaced quickly (on the way to a gig, overnight shipping from Chicago, etc), then it's risk that I think I could take on now. If the pre-amp craps out on me and the nearest replacement is in Germany, I don't like what that does to my gig logistics.

I was getting excited about this, but I'm starting to talk myself out of it now. For the record, I don't think it's overpriced. It's best compared to the Dyn-B, which has the same pre-amp dependency and costs a bit more.

I do think that Mr. Gage priced himself out of the market for other than top touring pros with the SoundClip. I think I would have tried that for $250 by now, despite expectations that it likely wouldn't sound as true as the Ehrlund. It does offer the fewest points of failure of anything, plug an instrument cable into it and go. Pre-amp or not, is your preference.

FWIW, I use a K&K dual channel Golden Trinity preamp with my Ehrlund, and it works great. I went with the K&K because I like to blend in a little signal with my Rev Solo2 every now and again for a little extra punch. I have one or Goran's preamps, and the sound to my ears is just the same in using either preamp - both are very transparent.

By the way, I will sell my Ehrlund preamp for $100 if anyone needs one, since I no longer need mine.

The Ehrlund EAP is great, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great natural mic like sound.

yeah and when someone here decides that the Ehrlund isn't for them PM me and I'll pick up the pick up and pre....

I'm counting on it. It makes "pulling the trigger" easier to do.

I think I'm going to like it, though. I am not in search of the holy grail of sound as much as a pleasing, workable sound and a setup that isn't intrusive to my bass. I'm optimistic.

Good to hear and interesting contrast to some other posts. I'm going to buy our friend's used Ehlund pre-amp and I'll try it direct and with the pre. I've got 2 days in studio next month, so I should just be used to it by then and will post my experiences.

I ordered an Ehrlund pickup and preamp from Jonas Lohse some time ago and have used it in rehearsals and gigs the last few week.

My overall impression is that this is a great, but not strictly plug-and-play system. It takes some experimenting getting the right pickup placement and amount of adhesive and pressure. Also, the pickup seems to pick up the whole of the bass, including unwanted vibrations and rattles. In my case, I ended up replacing my thin steel endpin, which produced an annoying, muddying background vibration around Ab.

On the upside, the sound is very natural and the feedback resistance is good. The pickup itself is discreet and does not interfere with the acoustic sound of the bass. I feel quite confident that the Ehrlund has ended my search for the right pickup. For now.

I tried a couple of different preamps with mine both FDeck's HPF Pre and The Headway EDB-1 and they didn't yeild particuarly useful results. The signal from the HPF was to soft and the Headway was to loud. But low and behold, when I just plugged the pickup staight into my Walter Woods MI-400-8 it sounded just fine. I got a chance to do some duos with a piano last weekend and it definitely sounded great.

It's kind of amazing how loud it will go and still produce essentially the same tone quality. but it's really a learning curve to place the pickup on the instrument.

Okay, I'm in. Rich's pre-amp is in route to me as is a new cable shortened mic/pickup from Front End Audio.

I'll report back. I'm very hopeful. I do have a recording date next month, so unless we end up not using it, I might be able to perfectly showcase this mics capability and my crappy playing...I mean, "our take on some standards".

I am literally sitting here watching for the UPS truck carrying my pickup as I type this. I have a rehearsal tonight and a trio gig on Thursday, then I'm going to hand it off to John Lilley for the weekend to use on his gigs. Expect posts from both of us next week.

I like your idea, I think it will work great. I'm going to try to keep it out of my afterlengths for now, though. It wouldn't be as bad with the Ehrlund as with the Full Circle because it doesn't stay in there when you're not using it, but I'm still going to try and I think I know how we'll see.

I was trying to figure out a way to mount the 1/4" phone jack on the Ehrlund so I came up with a kind of brainstorm. You simply buy a replacement jack for a Fishman Full Circle, cut the Ehrlund's cable to a sutable length, and solder a RCA plug onto the end of the cable. That way you can remove it anytime you like. I also got a guitar cable with a right angle plug, and some Schertler putty, but those are optional especally the putty, because it looks just like green Tack It.

Too complicated for me. I just use a switchcraft jack, mounted to the tailpiece with my small plastic clamp.
