ELF 10" Combo vs Rumble 100 vs Ashdown Studio 12

The GR Mini looks interesting, I take it that you've tried it? I'll see what I can find out. If I wasn't after a 'micro' head, I'd be looking at Genzier and Eich amps.

No, I haven't. But it's a bit higher quality brand than the others. If I had tonrely on one for a gig, that'd be it. In general, I don't see the need for a micro head with how small heads are generally.

Forgot, the GK MB200. For the 200w range, I'd do that. I have played those and they blow those cheaper amps out of the water.

I recently acquired an Elf 1x10 cabinet to use under my Little Mark III, and I'm blown away at what it will do. I bought it for it's extremely small size for personal practice, but it's obvious it'll do far more.

It won't replace my Traveler 2x10 and/or 1x15, but I can totally see using this far more often than expected.

If at all possible, get out out try one.

Ok, thanks.

Re Phil Jones, I feel that although these amps are undoubtably very good, they're more aimed at double bass players, augmenting the sound rather than being the sole sound source.

I'd rethink that opinion about Phil Jones amps - they are up there with any other brand for bass guitar. I have a BG-100 which is amazingly loud for its small size and of course very portable. 13.2lbs.

Can’t recommend an option unless I know what you’re using it for. If you’re playing with any kind of percussion, the Rumble is the only one that will get you heard at all.

If you’re not, well, that ELF sounds mighty nice. More my kind of tone.

Yes, I might go for the Elf combo or the Barefaced One10T & head, the GR Mini sounds interesting, but I don't know anything about their reliability, how loud the fan is, DI etc, but I'm suspecting they're top notch.

If fan noise is a concern, beware the Elf head. That's why I returned mine. It was unruly loud. Like... slightly elevate my voice to talk over it between songs in practice loud.

My Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 has an audible fan, but it's NOTHING like the Hoover on the Elf! My TC BQ500 is quieter than the Aguilar, and the Mesa TT800 is REALLY quiet. The MarkBass LM Blackline 250 was really quiet as well.

Get a little modelling system and good headphones. I use a BIG pro modeller (helix) and headphones and am happy as a clam, as is anyone around who doesn't have to listen to me (unless I'm yelli... erm, singing).

Hmmm, I suppose that might make some people happy, but I'd rather they hear me, actually:)

We were discussing a small light amp that would be suitable for commuting by trains, tubes, etc.

It is. It punches well above its class.

I'd like to be able to use the amp at home as a practice amp, also, so a noisy fan wouldn't be good.
The Elf also has some compression that kicks in at louder volumes, which might not be good, but maybe they were pushing the amp quite hard. Hopefully I'll get to try the Elf soon, but fan noise is a concern.

The GR Mini or the GK MB200 with a Barefaced OneTenT sounds like my best option so far, and as they're also in the UK, the best choice as I haven't come across Revsound over here.

The Phil Jones Cub (100 watts 15.5 lbs) looks promising, but I'm pretty sure a GR Mini + 10" would be a fair bit louder, and not that much heavier.

I’ve been playing mine with a Spectradrive di. You can add a compressor and little dirt if you like. I actually leave the amp flat and just eq with the spectradrive. Sounds pretty nice.

I also have a Spectradrive, they're rather under rated imo. I find its fine for setting up one sound, but as the drive setting is affected by gain and volume, drive is better left either on or off. As an alternative to distortion, the clean boost tone print works well.

As a freelance musician, it varies. I just want a light rig that I can carry. I have other louder stuff, but nothing you'd want to move without a car.
