Elon Musk as educator

I have been in schools my whole life (well, since I was 5 years old anyway). I would not entrust any school to teach non-biased critical thinking. There are many teachers who could do it, but there are just as many with an agenda that would infiltrate the process. I see this every day at the university. For every professor providing a forum fro open-minded evidence-based inquiry, there's another who is blatantly indoctrinating students with their biased world view.

That's the case with almost every subject. I had several teachers in high school and college inject their ideologies and politics into completely unrelated subjects.

But you could teach a class on the scientific method, including a guide to recognizing logical fallacies, as a science course.

There are multitudes of textbooks on this already available that could be very easily adapted, verbatim, to a high school classroom.

As long as the teacher stays faithful to the textbook and keeps their biases out of it (which they're supposed to do anyway), the students would be learning how to think critically.

I agree. Nor should being a wonderful person insulate one from criticism if the don't happen to be effective in whatever job they're doing.
Rather than blanketly stating (not that you specifically did this in the quoted post) that Musk says or does reprehensible things, would it not be fairer to state more specifically what act or statement he did/made caused one's opinion of him to be formed? From there, we could examine that instance, either confirm or disprove it's reprehensibility, and then move on to the next allegation.

Agreed. But there are also plenty of examples where people become famous and then say things critical of powerful interests and then the destruction machine comes out to destroy that person's reputation and livelihood.

Sometimes it's a combination of both.

I think it's fair to criticise Elon Musk for a lot of reasons. His takeover of Twitter is an example of a legitimate concern for his competence and judgement when it comes to his idea to found a new college.

But someone earlier in this very thread stated (falsely) that Musk had a connection to an infamous convicted sex trafficker with the implication that Musk couldn't be trusted around children because he was a pervert.

That's what I mean by critical thinking. A gullible person might believe that Musk is some kind of hero who can do no wrong, just because they hear he's a genius who's saving the planet, while another gullible person believes every lie told about him by his enemies.

The truth is neither of those things.

I think the anti-education sentiment that has been spread in the nation has that kind of caste stratification as one of its goals. With the Musk-esque privatization and profiteering along the way

Very wise. If anybody wants to know what Elon is about, they can look up the record of what he's done as well as see countless examples of his speeches and interviews.

Judging him on the basis of what his supporters say or what his critics say is foolish.

A history question: Would you have trusted Uncle Sam to defeat the Axis in the 1940’s? If so, what has changed?
Perhaps. But it seems to me they're doing the exact opposite. From my best understanding (I may be wrong), most K-12 schools in the U.S. teach kids what to think, and they do so in a way that suggests their own authority is not to be questioned.


I'll never forget what George Carlin had to say about this subject.

He said he went to a very liberal progressive Catholic school as a kid and they encouraged the students to think for themselves and question authority.

They did such a good job that by the time they were teenagers, most of them had left the faith.

I remember it so strongly because that's exactly what happened to me and my grade school friends.

If this is your take, then you’d surely also wish to see Mr. Keating — and tolerant, inventive teachers like me — dismissed.

The “that page is torn out sir scene”


As a public school teacher with 31 years of service in the different school districts, and adjunct professor at SUNY Potsdam, Clarkson University, and most recently Syracuse Univeristy, I can unequivocally confirm the truth of those statements. I'm retired from all public and private institutions of supposed higher learning, and resigned from SU. The environment there was absolutely toxic with the amount of hatred towards anyone expressing, regardless of how kindly, thoughtfully, and rationally, other than "accepted" viewpoints.

Kind of like this thread. It's cool and fun to put down Musk, and express one's distaste for everything about him in extremely strong terms. Express admiration for anything he's done, including allowing actual factual statements on Twitter/X that were banned under the previous controlling/controlled entities, and you expose yourself to the same vitriol. I tried early in the thread. No thank you.

It's always amazed me that those expressing the virtues of tolerance, diversity, and acceptance seem to be devoid of those qualities when differences of opinion arise, and often quite willing to express hatred. I am of the opinion, based upon 63 years of experience on this planet teaching thousands of students, that we are all extremely flawed. When flawed people do amazing things, that should still be celebrated and admired.

There's so many statements in this thread that could be countered, but not without crossing forum boundaries. Perhaps forum boundaries should be expanded to either prohibit unspecific bashing of people, or allow counter opinions that may contain some political content. To be honest, none of this enhances the enjoyment of this site.
As a teacher with a similar amount of experience in the same region of the US, I can unequivocally say that I’m not surprised that your take met with a good deal of disagreement and pushback. Of course those who I imagine disagreed with you about Musk also enjoy freedom of thought and speech, hopefully especially in the halls of higher learning, which you term “so-called.”

Nothing about free speech — especially in the workplace — says that unpopular, controversial, or contrarian opinions need be celebrated and accepted.

If you’d like to message me any responses that may as you say cross over TB thread norms, I’d welcome it in the spirit of openness and respect.

Nonconformity *IS* thinking critically, at least it is a common hallmark of that. A conformist, blind follower of a teacher can never lead youth to their own self discovery and true independence.

“Whoso would be a man, must also be a nonconformist” (or something to that effect) — Ralph Waldo Emerson, in “Self Reliance” I think.

Nothing has changed in the intervening decades. The government tends to follow the sentiment of the people, which is sometimes fickle and sometimes stubborn. Sometimes benevolent and compassionate while at other times angry and vindictive. Sometimes greedy and sometimes generous.

Right now, society is highly polarized and tribalistic. Your side is bad and my side can do no wrong.

Please allow me to clarify what I did say: Schools generally teach facts and knowledge fairly well but not critical thinking skills. They teach what to think, but not how to think. There are specialized classes, particularly in advanced education, that are exceptions to this. But those classes tend to be electives (or for elites) and few students take them.

Also, I stand by what I said when I stated that I had several teachers blatantly impose their ideological beliefs on us students (again, mostly in college), but the vast majority of teachers throughout all my years of education were very competent and some were even quite excellent.

I want to make clear that I'm not in any way bashing the American school system. It has its flaws, and limitations, but I believe it generally does a decent job.

Whether or not a school founded by Elon Musk will be good or bad is pure speculation on everybody's part. If he actually goes ahead then we'll just have to wait and see what results he gets.

Please allow me to clarify what I did say: Schools generally teach facts and knowledge fairly well but not critical thinking skills. They teach what to think, but not how to think. There are specialized classes, particularly in advanced education, that are exceptions to this. But those classes tend to be electives (or for elites) and few students take them.

Do you have any evidence to support the “not teaching critical thinking”

Completely absent is any mention of how to recognize logical fallacies. This deserves a semester of science class (at the very least, its own chapter) but it gets nothing.

Most adults don't even know what a logical fallacy is, although many people misuse and abuse the concept when they argue online, such as when they feel uncomfortable with their position and reflexively accuse another of making a "straw man argument" when no such fallacy has occured.

I'm not sure I understand the question, but I'll try to answer anyway.

The best examples I can think of are interviews and recorded lectures from the late physicist, Richard Feynman. They're exceptionally good and thousands of professional scientists today claim him as an early influence.

That aside, when I studied physics/engineering in college, critical thinking and the scientific method were automatically built into the curriculum.

Which brings me back to what I said earlier about Carl Sagan warning us that our civilization is becoming increasingly dependent on advanced technology and science that only an elite few understand.

It would be wise for the general population to be taught (preferably from a young age) not just general science facts, but about how scientists think. The vast majority of high school graduates know a bit of Earth science and maybe some biology, and a few even take some chemistry and physics. But hardly any of them (I'd be shocked if it was more than 2% or 3%) could say what the scientific method was.

Issues like climate change are inherently scientific (the science of climatology) and they're critically important. But we have a huge segment of society that thinks it's a complete hoax because they're scientifically illiterate. They think that a few loudmouths on some podcasts are more credible than all the professional scientists on Earth who study it for a living.

That's a problem.

Can't remember where I read it, but a recent article described how facts are less important - we're in the era of vibe-ism, how things feel carries way more weight than how things are.

Regardless, I agree with a good bit of this post.

As a true Scotsman, I submit.

Around this debate, moving on, witness a tangle of Occam's Razor-wire in the rubble. This is as it should be. Trouble presents itself, puffs out its chest. It's a veritable playground for trouble — also works very nicely, as a back-scratcher, for those hard-to-get-at regions. Society's problems will not be solved here. I have an itch to scratch.

In simple terms, overlooked, untended complexity stands out — othered — behind the wire. Fair and balanced takes a back-seat — the circular argument, a distraction, sutured-in, hits a brick wall, walks the razor-gang plank, loses all momentum — in an ocean of ideas — in the face of need, and warranted scrutiny.

There's no call, in truth, to be unnecessarily biased. Refrain. Bias is, ofttimes, ignorance. Wilful. Unnecessary. I humbly submit, teaching is the key to learning. And, stripped-back, it's simple.

In the real world, a teacher is a student, first and foremost, not an omnipotent dictator of terms. In the classroom, we share that journey, we share that burden. We teach. We learn. We learn to teach. We grow together, in the real world.

I'm very familiar with the slippery slope fallacy.

But it's not applicable to what I wrote because I was talking about legal precedent. If you modify a law to enable something desireable to happen based on a specific legal argument, when that law is enacted, then the argument can serve as a legal basis to extend the law into new territories that may not be so desirable.

This isn't hypothetical; it happens all the time.
