Elrick: Great Basses!

image.jpeg

I think they get a lot of love from people that are in the know. I played my first one about seven years ago and knew I would have to get one. I had never seen one in person until then. A year later one came up here on CL and I saw it within a couple of hours of it posting. I got in touch with the guy and told him I was on the way and would buy it without even playing it. I was that sure. As soon as I played it I knew without a doubt I had to have it. And bought it on the spot. They are some of the best of the best IMHO etc. I also own several other very nice basses. Tobias, Ken Smith, Minnieweather, Jerzy Drozd, Tune, etc. My Elrick is every bit as well made and as versatile as any I own and better than most. The workmanship is top notch, comfort factor and playability gets an A, the weight is light, balance is perfect. They are all active passive I believe. Mine goes to almost every gig.

Would love a chance to play one...heck...see one!!

As a side question...was there (very briefly) an off shore Elrick made? I have a foggy mid 2000s memory of seeing one at a shop in Seoul that was known for selling some of the MIK stuff that was normally not sold in country. (They would have G&L tributes, Epiphones, an occasional Lakland Skyline) back when they were all MIK...a

I played a couple of Elricks back in the day (over 10 yrs ago at Jimmy Coppolo's NYC shop when he was still in NYC). I thought they were really nicely made, good sounding basses.

Lately I've been casually kicking around the idea of getting a new bass, and I remembered playing a friend's Elrick maybe ~10 years ago that seemed really nicely built. So I checked out the current Elrick website about a week ago

Holy crap those are some nice looking instruments!

Would love to compare a new Elrick Master Series e-Volution to a new Fodera Imperial Elite.

Yes, there was.

Ever play one? Were they quite a short run?

No, sorry. I've never seen one in person. I'm not sure how long they lasted.

It was made by Cort and was a signature model.

I never liked the Cort Josh Paul I had. My Elrick I loved.

There was, briefly, a Cort Elrick model (it even used a "C" headstock inlay for "Cort" where the Elrick "e" is) that was produced, and it never really sat right with Rob Elrick. I won't go into everything, partially because my memory is choppy on it, partially because it's really Rob's business and I don't want to misquote him, but I seem to remember it was somewhat unauthorized. It didn't meet the standards that Elrick wanted for an import line (and if you've played his basses, you can tell he obsesses over quality and tolerances--just check out the control cavity cover for a simple example!), so it was a while before he actually started producing import Elricks. In about 2009, he released the first totally approved offshore Elricks, which were New Jazz Standards, and had them produced in the Czech Republic. Now they also make Evolution models.

I have never come close to owning a boutique bass by one of these smaller builders, but if and when I ever go that route, Elrick will probably be in my top five of builders to consider, and that's just based on looks at this point; I have never held, played, or even heard one...yet...:woot:

The Cort bass really had almost nothing to do with a real Elrick except the shape. I owned both at the same time. It was not a quality instrument as far as I'm concerned. At the time I frankly did not understand how Rob could authorize it. It makes sense if he didn't.
