EMG Club!

hi people

im going to by a set of emgs extended pickup series :a40j and a 40p5 to put on a peavy grind ntb five strings bass .the spacing between the strings is a little closer than the standard spacing is it a problem ?

No problem. The EMGs have bar magnets, not pole pieces, so they'll pick up evenly over the entire width of the pickup.

String Interface
The first choice in design is the string interface. The selection of a bar magnet or individual pole pieces is also an important one. All initial EMG designs use a bar magnet for two reasons - Pole pieces place too much magnetism under the strings and cause the lower ones (primarily low E, A, and D) to go "out of pitch" with a Doppler effect. This is especially true of the Fender Stratocaster* where 3 poles under each of the strings push and pull them through a variety of unnatural movements. Poles can also make intonation and tuning difficult. On the other hand, pole pieces have the benefit of a percussive attack giving the pickup much more of a "plucky" sound.
Designs featuring a bar magnet have a much more linear (balanced) output from string to string. Its attack is less pronounced than the pole piece design resulting in smoother distortion, and much better sustain. String bending is smoother because the output doesn't fade when you bend strings. By relying on the internal preamp for gain the bar magnet can also be smaller, further limiting the magnetic "pull" on the strings. And, the continuous magnetic field of the bar allows for any string spacing. Perfect for any multi stringed instrument, and the less conventional instrument.
Most EMG Pickups use a magnetic bar. Single coil pickups are available in both bar and pole-piece designs. There are fewer negative attributes to the bar and it's preferable, but if you like pole-pieces for your playing style then there is an EMG model for you.

I have a Hamer Chaparral Bass with a P split coil and a soapbar humbucker, as well as two Hamer guitars (Californian or Chaparral) with EMG's. I had my doubts at first that I would like them as I was told that they would sound sterile and lifeless, they were wrong. I really like them.

Just got it back from my buddy Eric @ Invalid Link Removed, my Douglas 5-string fretless now loaded with EMG HZ's, I'm not sure why people are saying such negative things about the HZ's but mine sounded BEAUTIFUL, they make this thing growl like a panther, harmonics jump out at you and no more noise problems (and especially no more radio signals). I had it converted to passive while I was at it, replaced the pots and now all it needs is a Radial Bassbone preamp, picking that up in a week and a half

Ok, here she is. I bought this beauty almost 10 years ago from a tiny used music shop near my house...paid $300
I love this bass.

I have never seen another like it. It looks like an ESP neck put on another body and a third EMG pickup was installed.

The controls are 3 separate volumes for each pickup and a stacked bass and treble control (active 9volt preamp) and a Schaller bridge.

I would love any help identifying this bass....any ESP experts out there?
I contacted ESP a few years ago and I believe they told me they had no record of the serial number.

Hello, club! After a few months without an EMG-loaded bass (:bawl:), I picked up a Spector Euro! It's got the stock EMG P/J setup with the Tonedump. Here's the kicker: the Tonedump was damaged when I received it from the seller--the seller didn't know if was damaged. He is sending me a brand new EMG BTS System to retrofit the Tonedump. Zing!

It has EMG Selects, I'm in! :D

I know EMG selects catch some flak, but I am absolutely in love with the bridge tone of this thing. It's nicer than the bridge tone (solo) of my Kubicki, and thats saying something indeed!

i know this was an older post but hopefully you can answer my question. the emg site recommend the the string spacing for the HB sized pickup less than 2 inches. whats the string spacing on your bass at the bridge and at the neck? my string spacing at the bridge is 2 and 1/8 of an inch. what would happen? if had a hb installed at the bridge. i'd really appreciate it if you could answer this question. i've been throwing it here and there but no ones really answered
