However, live, I find the single pickup settings most useful and mix friendly. I usually just use the soloed N or M and the series combos every now and again. Again, this is most likely because they are single coils and already have an inherent bright yet semi-flat bandwidth vs the stronger sounding EMGs.
I think in a live mix the mid-frequencies become much more important, and therefore the single-pickup modes are more helpful.
All of my other three-pickup basses (and guitars) use three identical pickups, which makes the tonal comparisons more consistent and understandable. This little EB is the first one I've done using three different pickups, so it's a bit of a different animal for me. These three pickups all have such distinct tones; I'll never understand people who claim that "all EMGs sound alike"...
