Love the what? BT/BQ pre-amp perhaps?

I was just wondering what it sounds like with the preamp. Not many sound samples. All of the decent samples i saw had stock pre amps

@bigtone23
This is great information! Thankyou for this .
I do favor the bridge pickup with my old single coils and ran them neck =2 or 3 ,bridge =10 , tone =2-4 with nickel round strings. Now with emg I’m trying not to just go with my “tradition” and experimenting on gigs and sessions. I do the pickup trick with you mentioned in the last paragraph for my jazz gigs.

I love how clean the sets I have are ( just,jvx and ja.). Now up close the j-x sounded killer live (with piano ,drums ,sax and trumpet) .super clear and fat also. I like the alnico Ja for most stuff , and am still learning the jvx. I think I like them a lot because they are paired with a great HG Thor heavy epoxy neck. Jury is still out.

Your help is invaluable. I owe you a beer at least. Btw, I’m in downtown Denver Capitol Hill.
Thanks again

Glad to help. I'll have that beer!

Hello! I was just given this bass by a band member. It was made by the bands original bassist back in the 90s. Anyone have any info on this pickup? From what I’ve read, it’s essentially a p style pickup in a humbucker size. It’s wired with outboard power so it needs to be plugged in with a 9v power supply. That being said, only the E and A strings were making noise and the pickup looks pretty knackered. Would age and wear cause this behavior or is it likely the wiring? Thanks!

Yes, that pickup is basically a standard EMG P in a guitar humbucker case. As made famous on Steinbergers.

The D and G strings being silent points to an issue with the coil under those strings. It's a ceramic magnet pickup so it's not likely the pickup is demagnetized on that coil. More likely there's a break in wiring internally or a failure on the preamp.

You can heat these pickups up in boiling water and peel the potting epoxy off, and sometimes the issue is obvious and repairable - but other times you kill the pickup even worse than the original issue. So it's a crapshoot.

If you really care about restoring the pickup, it might be worth reaching out to EMG to see if they'll repair it.

I’m not really worried restoring it given how badly it’s worn. I’ll put some other humbucker in it then. Thanks!

At a certain point in time my Ibanez had the following stacked modules: BTC, BTC, VMC, VMC.

The mode selector would allow me to flick between two wirings:
1. Neck PU in parallel -> BTC -> VMC -> PU selector & volume <- VMC <- BTC <- Bridge PU in parallel;
2. Outer coils -> BTC -> VMC -> PU selector & volume <- VMC <- BTC <- Inner coils.

However it was a bit overwhelming, so now I just have a 4-band configuration with two VMC's.

Hey everyone!
Haven’t been too happy with my atelier z pickups

love the alex al tone
But
What’s everyone’s thoughts on the
Emg J vs HZ

now other then - “HZ suck” I’ve seen quite a bit
I had a set of 40HZ in a yamaha and I loved it so..

I think the HZ are great. They're not the traditional active EMG, and since they have "less" technology in them, it led some to say they "Suck" because less is, well, less.

There's a worship bass player I have followed for years who was a Bartolini guy for ages. He recently switched his pickups from Barts to EMG-HZs and runs those into his Bart TCT preamp, and it sounds awesome!

The Js have a more focused sound to my ears. Personally I prefer the EMG DC pickups - I just like their voicing.

I have the DC in a steinberger synapse and considered even going for the DCX or CSX

I had the CSX in a six string with a delano preamp

Interesting! So you liked the CSX better? or was it just a case of being different?
When I bought my first set of DCs, the CS model hadn't come out yet. EMG advertised the CS as a "sweeter sounding top end" than the DCs. It's another paint-brush, basically. The DCs can have a bit of a grittier honk to their upper mids. In my case I've always just used onboard preamps and the amplifier itself to dial in (or out) what I want for any given situation.

I keep trying the other models when I can to see if my tastes have changed...

For me the CSX got growly
The dc for me was just aggressive with out any kinda growl more of a snarl? If that makes sense?

the dc for me was very in your face and in the sweet spot of my steinberger was very ballsy and with the piezo dialed in made it very “3D” and warm

The CSX was round and growly and full spectrum without being hair slicing and had a sweet top end, Emg was right on with that
The c string on my six felt very present and very vocal not just an another higher string

I love the J set. However, if I were to get any new EMGs, it would be the JA. That little extra attenuation of the highs from the EMG alnicos has become my preference. It's a subtle difference from the ceramic J.

HeadlessUSA has used EMG HB pickups for sale.

I finally finished up the install on my Ltd Jazz 5’er. I went with the DE DC/CS40 Set and a BQC System. I’m only running it at 9v right now because I hate soldering, but I don’t notice any issues with headroom.

I’ve gotta say that I am beyond pleased with this setup. Tons of usable tones. I love soloing the bridge, rolling back the treble and boosting the mids a wee bit. I even like the tone of the bridge soloed. That’s very rare for me. Gotta say, EMG has won me over.
