EMG Club!

Yes, those are 40's on 4-strings... Deans are weird

It actually makes sense because the three pickups (35,40,45) are a bit different on the inside. The coils are different sizes, and that effects the tone of the pickup.

Maybe they tried both and like the 40 better. Another reason might be that it's more convenient for them to just order one size that will work with both 4 & 5 strings.

Look at the new Carvin soapbar. They use the 6 string pickup for the 4 and 5 too! That looks weird to me.

I wouldn't do it, but maybe that's why they do.

The one on the left has EMG's in it. I sold the one on the right.

So do I get a number? :D

Actually, I did this mod myself. These things came with the most awful humbuckers in them (they looked cool, but sounded like poop). I went sizing up the pu's, thinking they looked a little big, and lo-and-behold, the 40's fit...

... almost...

I actually had to rough-sand out about an 1/8 inch width-wise out of the pockets to get them to fit, buy different pot knobs, and I'm limited to 9V until I route out the control cavity another 3/8 inch on each one.

I'm a sucker for obnoxious shaped basses, and have actually been considering buying a Razorback, but I'll be opening that sucker up at the store before I settle on it, because these things are a big PITA to mod once you get inside.

An update: I've received my Spector ReBop 5 DLX FM with the standard 40HZ/TonePump electronics package, and although I'll agree that the TonePump is far too hot I must say I'm a fan of the passive HZs - consider them "Unreal EMGs" if you want, but I think that work very well if you're a fan of passive pickups and/or not a fan of the traditional active EMG tone. They're much smoother IMO, and can be used for a variety of musical styles.

I have a ReBop 5 DLX FM lined fretless on special order, and once that comes in at the beginning of November I'll most likely be installing Aguliar OBP-2s in both of them but keeping the HZs initially to see how that combination works out. I'm traditionally an active pup player however, so if it's not the tone I have in my head I'll take it from there and consider active EMGs (the much-complimented DC/CS combo or perhaps 40TWs) or possibly Bassline or Nordstrand Big Singles after I do more research on them in Spectors. No rush, however - even the HZ/TonePump setup is hardly a "bad" sound. :)

...but most recently I picked up a pre-DLX ReBop 4-string (no Crown inlays, Alder body but no Maple top) for a steal considering it came with aftermarket active EMGs and preamp already installed: 35DC in the neck, 35CS in the bridge and the 18v BTS. Aside from not having a Volume/Volume setup with I prefer to a Master Volume/Pan Pot (which I may change in the future) I'm lovin' this combo and it very well may push me farther into the EMG camp. :D

One question for anyone that might know the answer, however - does anyone know the size of Hex keys the EMG-supplied knobs take? I have a set of Q-Parts knobs I'd like to install, and none of my keys seem to work... both Metric or American.

I have a TW installed in a TBC. It sounds great. tons of output. I wired it up 18 volts and used the wiring mod thats floating around here to equalize the outputs when switching from single to dual coil mode. I can provide the diagram if needed. I never used it without the mod but from what I heard the output level is quite different from he 2 modes and I wanted it to be more even when switching between the 2.

I too am looking to change the pickups on my Schecter Elite 5 from HZs to something a bit warmer sounding. I agree that these basses have a "quack" sound to them in the mid register. Say from about open D up to the next octave D on athe D and G string.
Sounds like the DC/CS combo is the way to go. How would two CS sound? I want a good defined growl all the way down to low B but I want to eliminate the honk/quack sounding midrange.
I play fingerstyle only. Classic rock, country, blues.

I think active EMGs with an EQ would take care of that duck. :hyper: I love my EMGs, I want more, NOW!
