Sorry to ask such an amateur question. But here it goes.
Are my EMG Hz pickups and preamp best compatible with a solid state or tube bass amp ?

I use a set of EMG HZ humbuckers on my nicer SG guitar and I play through a tube guitar amp and SS bass amp. They sound and work great with both.

Only issue I can think of is the loud signal could be too much for some amps if cranked, but a bass amp especially should handle it unless you really crank everything.

I just cut the bass when I use that guitar through my tube amp to be safe, I actually like to play stereo and let my bass amp handle all the low end to be extra safe sometimes.

A preamp could be too hot for some tube amps, maybe that's what they were talking about. Would just cause earlier breakup though I imagine, and it should be easy to dial it back.

Only active EMG pickups are fully compatible with all kinds of amps. The HZ is passive and lacks juice that tubes like. However, the HZ is fully compatible with single-rectifier tube amps because they don't need lots of juice.

My passive EMG HZ pickups actually sound lovely through my tube amp, amazing classic rock and blues tones for days. It has plenty of juice, I actually tend to have to turn down a bit compared to playing with a strat.

Yeah I wouldn't take the guys word on anything lmao. Some people will sling crap and stand by it without having a clue about it. I had a fishing buddy who would listen to this old timer and take his word as the word of God no matter how ridiculous it sounded. I don't want to sound like I am bragging but I have spent most of my life fishing for every type of fish in the US, built rods, tied flies and know a lot about fly fishing and Spey fishing. Well we would meet up every weeknight and fish together at a pond that's stocked with trout in MA.

He would use spin casting gear and I would usually use my fly rods and flies that I have tied to match the evening hatches that the trout would rise for and even jump to get those little ones that made it off the surface. Well the old guy told my buddy (who argued with me about it till I brought it up at the local bait shop) that the reason why the trout leaped out of the water was because they were living in still water and needed to jump to release their eggs lmao. So I argued with him about how sterile fish that were released from the hatchery couldn't possibly produce eggs and even if he was right then how could they have a breeding cycle that lasts 9 straight months out of the year lol. But he stood by the guys idiotic advice until the guy at the bait shop called it the stupidest thing he ever heard which was amazing since he owned a bait shop where you hear all kinds of BS lol.

Most of the time an old timer who tells you something is a pretty good person to learn something from because they have been there and done that in life. But when it comes to fishing or hunting, take a persons story with a grain of salt because if they are not family then they're usually talking out their rear end lol. But hearing it about something to do with instruments is a first for me lol. I would definitely not let him get away with this one. Anytime he ever questioned something, he had to make a decision or it was a situation where you had to make a decision on something, I would work in the time when you almost plugged your bass with the EMG PU's in to a tube amp. Just to remind him how stupid he was for thinking that hahahahaha!!!! Also wouldn't the PU's then come with a warning in the manual and shops warn you about mixing the two together if it were true.

Yeah I just had a birthday pass and after hitting forty 6 years ago, I tend to now hate birthdays! Just another year towards losing something, something hurting in the morning, vision not as good as it used to be, losing more hair and having new hair show up in new places lol.

I'm happy to hear this. If not I had some questions about your statement, like "What constitutes a single rectifier tube amp; A half wave rectifier or a full wave in a single envelope? The old Fender Twins had lots of them actually, multiple silicon rectifiers in series to make up a full wave bridge that would handle the high PIV of the B+.
