Double Bass endpin length

Winged fruit? :D

Do you guys eat kiwi fruit in St Louis?
Way down here we have a bird called a kiwi. It may seem like a vestigial member of the bird population but we're doing our best to protect it from stoats and rats. It's actually our national emblem.
My pal GrowlerBox is originally from our closest neighbouring country. I think their national emblem is the platypus. Or is it the wombat?

Nearly. Along with the inevitable kangaroo, it's another bird with vestigial wings, the emu (pronounced "eemyou", not "eemoo", for the yankees).

Incidentally, I don't think Kiwis really exist -- you never see them, and even in zoos, they're behind glass in the dark. All animatronic.

"More rare to get two kiwis sitting on a power line..."

Only gonna happen if the line is down...and then the poor blighters are likely to get fried.

You fellows surely have a nice little country, there. My Dad moved there in '73, and lived there 32 years. Part of the time in Lower Hutt, but the last twenty years or so in Massey. He finally moved back to the states in 2005, and died in 2007. He loved NZ, though. Easy to see why.

Sorry to hear about your dad 1st Bass. My last surviving parent (mum) died in 2008.
I live in a suburb of Lower Hutt. Who knows, maybe I briefly chatted to your dad at a bus stop or in a supermarket? The world is a small place. Take care, my friend.

I really like kiwi fruit, either by itself or in a fruit salad. But I rarely get to eat one that has been ripened properly, due to having to be picked less than ripe to make the trip to the midwest USA.

There is a fraternal/social/benevolent/charitable club in the USA that has taken the bird as its mascot, called the Kiwanis Club:

Okay, I'll ask - how long is your endpin? :D

It's easy to cut off excessive endpin. No reason to have it vibrating inside the bass and the saw cut is not visible. But how do I add another notch (groove? indentation?) for the wingnut stopper? Because of a sore shoulder, I want to shorten my endpin, but it is still too high at it's lowest setting. How do I do this without mangling the pin with a hacksaw or a rat tail file?

"Kiwi fruit" is the "stage name" for Chinese gooseberry.
It was a brilliant PR move. Who would buy buy a Chinese gooseberry?

Bump

I'm not a particularly tall bassist, and my endpin is much longer than it needs to be. When I have it at my normal playing height I can see about a foot of endpin inside the bass when I look in through the f-hole. Sometimes I think it causes a bit of a rattle.

I'm thinking about cutting it off to about half of its original length. Any reasons why not to do this? I'm not planning on selling the bass to a taller guy any time soon.

LukeS:

I agree you don't need excess length of your end pin inside your bass if you don't need it. But why not take the end pin out and play your bass...then put it back in. If there is no difference...why bother cutting the endpin?

I think that he will need some sort of endpin, even a stub, if only to keep the wood of the bottom of the bass off of the floor?

I make notches with a 9/32" chain saw file - cuts quickly and cleanly and about the right size.

Good luck! ;)
