I think in both cases (rock music and electric guitars and basses) the paradigms endure due to simplicity. Nobody's picking up dad's oboe and playing Bach without serious instruction and discipline.
But any motivated kid can learn a couple barre chord shapes on guitar and start a band.
As far as the instruments go, if the design works, why mess with it? Like, what rock music can't you play with a P or a J, or a strat, tele or lp?
