I dunno Meddle - I've had a few great nights out in Edinburgh and Glasgow recently and had a blast - King Tuts is a great example.
I think if you go looking you will find something to suit you...

As for the rest of Blighty - very few of the best bands -IMO- in recent times have emerged from London or Brighton..... So there must be good stuff happening somewhere :smug:

Its not impossible. You can empty your wallet down George Street and beyond if you fancy. I was at a gig last night at a venue called Voodoo rooms, and a few uptempo Glasgow (ha!) bands were playing, and the audience just stood and watched them like they were down the art gallery.

I missed out on a night out to that curry place. My flatmate had the curry hell, said it was awful. He said it was just chilli without any other flavour. Apparently it's free if you finish it as well, he didn't.

Newcastle can be a good night out though, I was generally into the Trillians/Legends type night out. Good time, good times. I even DJed Trills once...I think I have a picture...

London, which is exciting and fun, amazing variety of people and music, but it's overcrowded, far too expensive and generally a pain in the @ss. It's where I live, and I love it, but it's not an easy place to live.
Then there's Brighton, which is on the south coast - full of young people, lots of partying and a great music scene, but it tends to get a bit bleak during the winters there.
The rest of England, as far as music and culture goes, is bleak and depressing IMO.

Actually - that is a bit of a generalisation - but personally I have found that London and Brighton are the best places for Music scene in England!!

Brighton is our seaside vilage that has become the weekend haunt for London celebrities - it's so easy to get to Brighton that is hase become the Number One getaway for musicians/actors/Djs etc from the Capital!

It also means that if you live in Brighton as I do - then London is in easy reach for work and music !! :)

But that's part of the big attraction of Brighton - so it has loads of music venues and clubs - which get big audiences from Londoners on holiday!

But it is small enough that you can walk to anywhere in the town centre - e.g. from my house - so you don't need to use cars and worry about drinking etc.

We have the biggest cultural festival in England :

Can't say I agree with that at all.

There is a pretty large alternate scence, be it from indie, rock, punk or metal (or whatever else). Glasgow certainly has a bigger "scene" that Edinburgh, you also get most of the better big gigs :(.

While generally true of most of Scotland, we have had some decent days this past week. Went up Arthurs Seat with the missues a week back, good times!


Also, I wouldn't say it is entirely proped up by students, Dundee was far worse for it IME. Tho, the tourists are a pain. On the brighter side, we do get the festival, even tho that's been pretty bleak the last couple years.

I'd like to think, instead of our history bringing interest, out compeltelly incompetant council does a better job. f-ing trams, but I digress!

I dare say I kind of fall into the student catagorey, tho it does involve working 50 weeks a year and a monthly pay check. So maybe I'm biased!

I'd say the biggest problem with the music scene in Edinburgh is probably the lack of advertising. I tend to only find out about gigs by word of mouth.

Aw man, just avoid George Street, other than the Standing Order (which, is only fun for watching a game in a crowded atmosphere), George Street is just a rip and a waste of time. Not to mention your average George Street goer tends to look down thier noses at everyone!
