Enter the Void

Okay, I saw Enter the Void last night. Yes, the visuals were stunning and I loved the Pink Floyd-style sound effects...very trippy. It was like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas done in the style of the Blair Witch Project with a little bit of 2001: Space Odyssey thrown in for good measure.

It was a decent flick but for me, it suffered the same problem as Fear and Loathing; it tried a bit too hard to "trip me out" at the expense of a more substantial storyline. And yes, I was proper! :ninja:

What's your interpretation of what happened in the end? I kind of felt like it was based on that book they mentioned about the Tibetan stages of death, and in the end he was reincarnated with an inception. What do you think?

This was a very strange movie, throwing most classic movie elements out of the window...
As a matter of fact it didn't feel like a movie much at all, as much as a strange voyeuristic view of actual people, rather than characters working there way through a story line with towards a big resolution at the end. I actually pretty much had the whole plot within at least the first 30 minutes or so, but thats not what grabbed me in this movie, like I mentioned before, it was the raw realism that was so entrancing for me (since being sober some of the visual elements were definitely getting a little old...)

The one thing that really threw me off was the very awkward sort of sexual tension that goes on between two of the characters which left me both thankful yet confused, it was never resolved, but I'm also appreciative that it wasn't sort of thing....

But now that it is over, I'm very surprised, going into to it I was expecting a very cranial mindf*** type of movie, but for me at least, except for a few points (the dream), it was very easy to follow yet still riveting and very entertaining to those of us that don't (always) need overly smug talking animals and ridiculously pretentious stories to enjoy a film. I also would recommend this movie to others, though there are parts that are very, VERY graphic, though thats part of what I like about it, that its not afraid to show the dirtier side of human nature.

All in all, a truly original film that leaves you with almost the same feeling as when you wake up from a very lucid dream, somewhat confused, but for those first few seconds afterwards, with an entirely different perspective of the world.

Sober rating: 9/10 since some of the visuals can start feeling a little excessive.

"Properly" watched rating: purple/10

P.s. @Maki,
I agree with your interpretation due to how the movie really did seem to closely revolve around the theme set up early in the movie, I'd just imagine that they'd follow that through to the end.

That's what I got from it...he was reincarnated as his sister's newly incepted baby...which is kind of odd given the slightly incestuous undertones between the siblings. That was also the point in the movie where he seemingly "came down".

Yeah, I hear you on the sexual tension. I kind of interpreted it as a kind of weird response to the loss of both of their parents, so they kind of became their parents in a weird way, and they maybe felt that sexual tension... Not sure, I'm glad it didn't delve too far in that direction, that would have made it pretty damn creepy in an unnecessary direction.

Yeah, I was kind of expecting him to to go through the Tibetian 7 stages of death (I think there were 7, right?). Perhaps he did, and I just didn't notice, but to me, it kind of seemed like he was just in the first stage, and he could exist in all space and time. Yeah, I would have liked to have it perhaps end on the baby's birth. Still, it was a great flick just the same. Since I posted this thread, I think I've easily watched it like 10 times. I agree with the consensus on 'purple' rating, but I would have added a little stickiness to it. :D

I watched it for the first time the other night, was going to write my own mini-review, but elgecko said it for me. :)

And I watched it stone-cold sober. It is trippy, all by itself, but I appreciated the deeper elements and storyline as well.

Unique, engaging, and memorable, in many ways, from the setting to the cinematography, a pretty major accomplishment.
