Are you saying that 1.you don't believe that enabling exists or 2.I don't believe that I should enable someone.
I'm pretty sure you're down with #1. Most addicts won't change until they hit what they perceive as rock bottom or when they realize that the drugs will cause them to lose loved ones, etc.
Enabling or whatever you would call it keeps people from hitting that point.
If you are giving to get something back then that is selfish. I don't thik most people think of it that way though.
Its great to give, but maybe better to give to an organization that can help people with their core problems imho
I don't believe enabling exists. It's an illusion we create because of the belief that we have control over other people's lives. Controlling our own lives is a full time, all engrossing task by itself. To think we have any control over others is an illusion, and so therefore enabling is as well.
I am giving to get something back, and I get it back immediately, right at the moment I give.
We are ALL connected to one another. Think of a drug addict or a homeless person as your left hand (if you are right handed). If your left hand was in pain, would you deny it comfort simply because you consider it a useless appendage? No, you would try to help lessen the pain, because though you may never use your left hand, it is a part of you and comforting it makes you as a whole, feel better.
And so it is with giving to the homeless, or drug addicts, etc. As you give unto them, you give unto yourself.
And just to clear up a misconception about my feelings on selfishness...
You assume that selfishness is the same as
only caring about yourself.
To me, selfishness is caring about one's self, but you can be selfish AND care about others. Selflessness, is having no regard for one's self. Unless you are selfish, how can you be of any use to anyone else? Besides, we are all selfish. It is our nature to be, and impossible to function in any way without it. Selfishness is not a bad thing, in and of itself.
And those who don't know me, are not aware of the depths I have risen from. My wife and I both help people with all kinds of problems, from being homeless to drug and alcohol addictions, to low self esteem, depression, etc.
The first step in helping these people is to not deny them resources (and not make judgments as to how they use these resources). Secondly, we get them to take responsibility for their lives and get them to understand they can control their own lives (and in fact they always have, and are at this very moment). Their thoughts, choices and actions have led them to where they are. You cannot be a drug or alcohol addict without making the choice to use it, or abuse it. Once you become physically addicted, to claim you are powerless over it is negative and defeatist.
It is this negative thinking that has led our society to play the blame game and always believe everything negative is something or someone else's, fault. Funny how we are willing to take credit for the good and positive in our life, but we blame others for our problems. Take responsibility for ALL of it, and your life will be lived with purpose.
We don't believe that people are in the position they are in because of anything outside themselves. To believe that, is to predispose yourself to a negative, defeatist attitude. The "poor me" pity party. Get this...everything in YOUR life...it's ALL your fault. It's also to your credit. You choose how you want your life to be lived, and NO ONE can do this for you.
Your life is
your life, but know that ALL the people of the world are a
part of your life, just like your left hand is a
part of your body. If you don't give to others, you are only taking away from yourself.
