Envelope filter/follower addict support group

Got the Wonderlove this weekend. Sounds a lot like the Proton, but more flexible, especially with the resonance control. It's a great feature, especially for synthy boards.

I have to head out of town for work for a few days, but when I get back I'll post some more recordings, including a comparison of the the 3 Leaf filters that I currently have (Wonderlove v1, Groove Regulator 2, and Proton IV).

For background, I used to ow a Wonderlove v2 (or Deluxe), which I found a little harsh/too much high end for bass, and Protons v2 and v3 (thing wrong with them, just felt the need to upgrade for some reason - both are nice filters).

I never owned a Groove Regulator v1, and never felt the need to since I have the GR2.

And I'm still wanting to snag a Chromatron soon (do i need to? No. Do I think that it will sound hugely different from the rest? Also no. So I still want to try it? I wouldn't be much of an addict if i didn't!!). Spencer makes a helluva filter!

Just got a 3Leaf Proton V2 yesterday. Still very much in the discovery/honeymoon period but I really liked it from the first note.

I forsee this one being with me for the long haul. Also have a 3Leaf Groove Regulator v1, EMMA DiscumBOBulator v1, EHX Nano Q-Tron, VFE Mini Mu, ProTone Pedals Flying Eye and a BYOC Envelope Filter that is modified for better bass response.

In the true spirit of envelope filters, each one is unique and I regularly swap them around on boards, depending on mood.

I did a little more recording tonight - the Supafunk, the Funk Machine, and the Wonderlove. All played with my Fodera Emperor Deluxe thru an iD14 USB interface into my Mac. Public - Google Drive

First off, the Supafunk is a funk machine. At first I wasn't sure what to think, as I thought I was getting to much junk when I played too hard, but I must not have been feeling the funk, cuz tonight it was dynomite! I mean seriously, listen to that funk! I'm gonna hang onto this, I am seriously digging it.

Next up is the Funkmachine. It's got this groovy little percussive pop to it. Like every note just "pops" a little bit. I bet this would be a lot of fun with a drummer.

Then the Wonderlove. I gotta say, Spencer can make a damn fine filter. It's got a lot of personality, it's deep and it's full, and it just drips with grease (maybe not as much as the Supafunk - but then again I'm not sure anything does). One thing I really like about the Wonderlove (and the GR2, and others) is the separate "attack" and "decay" controls - I demonstrate this at some point where I set the two knobs just right, and I start wailing around like a wanker. It was fun tho. Maybe about the 2:44-ish mark, you can really tell how having those controls sound with faster playing. It's a wonderful, wonderful filter that adapts so nicely to my playing style.

Pics of the starting points, as always, LMK if you have any comments or questions.

The Seamoon Funk Machine is a pretty cool pedal - the more I play with it, the more I like it. I have it up for sale, and I was thinking of taking it off the market but ... after playing with the Supafunk I found that in downsweep mode that I could still get that percussive pop.

Did you sell your B-tron?

Had I known...
oh man ... I should have mentioned that petty much every thing goes on sale at some point (I'll note the exceptioms_. I've got a running classified ad that I've been adding to.

Things have been a little slow on the filter front - I ended up picking up an IE Xerograph Deluxe again, mostly because I wanted to see how the resonance control works with synthy stuff.

I also have a nice Meatball clone on the way (Artisanal Effects Meathead), and I pre-ordered one of these in a custom color and knobs - The Funky Puppy - PREORDER

Had some nice chats with the builder and he is an outstanding guy! This will replace my Agent 00Funk and Brown Dog so that I can keep them for home/studio use and take this out to gigs. These are supposed to be the closest out there - he took two original units and studied them to get the details exact.

I have the Funky Puppy. It’s awesome! I would be very curious to get your take on it, especially since you can compare it to the original. It reacts very differently with other pedals before it. For me, it’s best on its own.

I've owned a few Meatball clones in the past and just never really got along with them. I ended up buying an Artisanal Effects Meathead and .. just wow. I absolutely love it. I don't remember any of the previous ones that I have owned sound nearly as good as this, I have to say that it knocked my socks off (and I wasn't even wearing socks!!)!

It's thick and juicy with a ton of booty! I'm gonna have fun with this tonight, and I'll see if I can get some recordings done this weekend. But hot damn, the response and the chewiness and the outright massive FUNK!

I'm thinking that I never really had a "real" Meatball clone before (maybe the closest is the 3 Leaf GR2, which has been my favorite for a long, long time, but that's not a clone, just "based on" from what I understand). I can see why people love them so much, as I am entirely digging this!

Great job Artisanal Effects - oh, and BTW, the owner/builder is a helluva nice guy, answered all of my questions quickly, and was a pleasure to deal with - and that's always a plus in my book!

Thanks a lot Jeff, I’m so glad you like the pedal!

The Meatball has a "companion" pedal - the Cheese Source(?) - kind of like how the Chunk Systems pair together, the Meatball and Cheese is a classic pairing for synth type sounds. I ordered this today to go with it - Artisanal Cheese Fuzz Pedal – Lovetone Big Cheese Clone

More information about my synth pairings here! Synthy analog bass pedals that are designed to work together

I mentioned earlier that I picked up an Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe again. I *like* it as a stand alone filter, but there are ones that I love. Where I'm having a lot of fun with the XD is paired with other pedals - it goes very well with a Pigtronix Mothership 2!

With everything in and out, I thought it would be useful to post a current state of my envelope filters:

Currently own (and plan on keeping):
3 Leaf Wonderlove
3 Leaf Groove Regulator 2
3 Leaf Proton IV
MuTron Microtron IV
Mutron TruTron 3x
Artisanal Effects Meathead
Chunk Systems 00Agent Funk
Maxon AF-9
Emma DiscumBOBOulator

Currently own and on the fence:
Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe
SolidgoldFX Supafunk

On the way:
Really Good Pedals Co. Funky Puppy (Chunk Systems Clone)

Everything else that I've posted about is either sold or in the process of being sold!

I still need to get a few recordings down, but that might wait until a few more things on the synth bass side arrive.

Edit: and FWIW, I'm still going to pick up a Broughton Joshwah again, and at some point either a Moog or Moog Clone ... and the Maxon AF-FL Fireblade filter, which might be my white whale!
