Envelope filter/follower addict support group

Over the weekend had a chance to really sit down and A-B my Moog MF-101, Dr. Scientist Dusk, and Source Audio C4 (with Moog filter preset) with various headphones and speaker setups - all sounded fantastic, with the Dusk being stupidly close, but the Moog just had that little bit of extra "quality" as the filter snaps open and close way more smoothly and musically.

I would be super interested to hear if anyone has A-B'd the Moog with the PastFX filter. I really like how PastFX preserved so much of the sauce on my vintage Clone Theory so I'm sure it's damn close. No idea how they magic'd it to be so small, looking at how enormous the original circuit is.

That being said, if anyone wanted to get most of the way there with an analog filter that has a bunch of other options (LFO, swell mode, etc.) I would wholeheartedly recommend the Dr. Scientist Dusk, I don't see it discussed here a lot. Definitely keeping mine!

I'd be interested as well into a direct comparison between the PastFX and the real Moog. I've seen some reviews online, but none quite "personal," IYKWIM.

I had one before and I liked it, but didn't "love" it .. but my tastes have changed. FWIW, I tried two Meatball clones a while back and didn't really love either of them (once the honeymoon period wore off), but the Artisanal Meathead is one of my new faves. I'm honestly not sure if it was because my tastes changed or if the other clones were just not up to snuff.

I think individual units can also vary a bit, or maybe I got more deaf from blasting music - I really dig my FFettronica Meatball clone but when I had the opportunity to try the real thing from a friend I wasn't really feeling it, through a fairly similar setup that I play through now. Thanks gang for introducing me to the Artisanal website - those look fantastic so I'll have to keep my eyes peeled.

For the Moog vs PastFX comparison, the most I saw was reviews that the original Moog is "warmer" perhaps due to the gain circuit and lack of bypass? I used to play with a bypass loop to tame the noise but now I embrace the gain!

I think that was one of the ones that I tried lol. So yeah, to your point, I think they are all different. PLus taste is subjective and I know that Mine have changed. And I love the Artisanal stuff - I have the Cheese fuzz coming, so I'm excited fo that!

I always wonder if that bias, i.e. the Moog is older, more expensive, so it must be "warmer" for some reason ... but I'm strongly considering the Past FX again!

Has anyone tried the OG Prometheus? Not the DLX or anything like that, just the first Subdecay Prometheus, without all the bells and whistles?
I have and had a bunch, but no Prometheus. Always been curious though..
Not trying to derail or stealing anyone's thunder, but this one is special.

No derail of thunder stealing at all, this is one of the reasons why I started the thread! I've been looking at that (also fits in nicely with my other thread on bass synth set ups).

What do you like about it?

It’s a wonderful device. Its responsiveness invites you to really play the pedal. I don’t know what circuit it compares to historically speaking, but it covers from extreme wubby dubby, to Looney Toons slingshot territory. If you put it in a dry blend, (it lacks it’s own blend), you open up a lot of options with the HP and Band pass modes.
I’m a big fan of the OG Prometheus.

Nice! I've seen a few pop up lately, thinking about picking one up ...

It’s not the Past FX but I did a direct comparison between the Moog MF-101 with the Triungulo Labs Barbernera which is another Moog clone.

They sounded near identical to my ears and besides a slight difference in the positions of the pots, performed the same. I sold the Moog and kept the Barbernera.

I did make some sound clips at the time using a line selector to switch between each pedal. The first pedal you hear in each clip is the Barbernera followed by the Moog.

I have one on the way - when it lands I'll do some recording, and also get a few of the other ones that I have been meaning to get done.

This one is now up there on the GAS list.

I'm still waiting to pick up another Joshwah (but I figure I'll wait until one pops up used), but with the JW, the Octavarium, and the Wahvelope being the only ones on the list, I'm running out of EF GAS.

I doubt that condition will last long :-)

I also have a buddy with an OG Moog 101. I can't borrow it (something something about not trusting cats around pedals), but we're going to hook up after the Past FX arrives for a comparison.

Nice man, thanks for this! I didn't hear a difference between the two, seems like neither pedal has a problem getting funky!
