Envelope filter

Same topic, different question:

I would like to know what envelope filter would get as close as possible to Bootsy’s starbass sound in the song “Creepin’” off “The Power Of The One” CD. Any thoughts?

My Mr. Black Fwonkbeta gets pretty juicy like Bootsy.
it's a pretty agressive pedal, so i use some compression to tame the extremes.

I always thought the vast majority were down-only. It seems only recently that it's become more common to have both up and down, basically anything new has both, but most of the classics TTBOMK were all down.

DOWN
DOD 440 — original
DOD 545
DOD FX25
DOD FX25B
EHX Bassballs
EHX Micro Q-Tron
Aguilar Filter Twin
Frostwave Resonator
Mr Black Fwonk Beta
Seamoon Funk Machine
MXR Bass Envelope Filter
BJFE/Mad Professor Snow White

All of the ones of those I've used are up sweep filters. The 'quack' with the slow release is an up-sweep filter; meaning the filter center starts low and sweeps up when triggered before releasing back down.

The Bass Microsynth or the Q-balls really make this clear with the way their filter setpoints work. When you start low and go high you get the quack or kind of a rising squishy sound and when you reverse it you get sounds like the filter is swallowing the highs.

To the best of my knowledge.

CORRECTED... GEEZE.

FFS — I HAVE GOT TO STOP POSTING WHEN I'M SLEEP DEPRIVED (which is every night)...

It's like I'm looking at Blue, Thinking Blue and then saying RED while still picturing/thinking "BLUE", only it was UP not down...

Box of shame...

yes, the Fwonk can get very aggressive. in fact, i am still trying to dial in the sweet spot with my rig.
it's sort of a "one-trick pony" but that one trick is pretty darn fun to play with!
So, I have been conducting filter wars for the last 4 years. Mxr, Bass Balls, Aguilar, sea moon, Josh way. Emma Discombobulator, Fwonk, Dod.
To name a few. Never had a Meat ball. Or any of the 3 leaf filters but, I bought the Aguilar twice and the Fwonk twice. So far the Fwonk is on the board. Just took Aggie off. And sea moon sits on the shelf as well.

EHX Q-Balls can do up or down. The Start and Stop controls really allow you to decide the width/depth/voicing of the sweep. Those controls also allow you to get a wide variety of fixed filter frequencies. The Q-Balls also has a Blend control so you can use the band pass and even high pass modes while keeping your low end.

I went through a similar metamorphosis... with the Fwonk and the Aggie rising to the top but I landed on the Filter Twin. It is alot less reliant on a consistent input so it works best for me because I love to switch out and play different basses all the time. The Fwonk is the better sounding filter but requires more tweaking bass to bass.

Filter wah is the most funnest of bass effects but in my repertoire does not see much live use, so I go for the one that's easiest to use and the Filter Twin is consistent and musical with very little effort.

IMHO & YMMV of course.

very interesting!
i was considering the Aggie and the Josh Wah before i pulled the trigger on the Fwonk.
previously on my board was the the mu-fx micro-tron iii, which is great, albeit a bit lower gain than where i need it to be.

Ideally, i'm looking for something somewhere between Fwonk and micro-tron (gain-wise), though i am quite pleased with the Fwonk these days, especially paired with some compression.

I was thinking I was going crazy because you're usually pretty knowledgeable :D.

Thanks. It is not you who are crazy, it is I who am inSANE!
I deny being knowledgeable, though, that's why I'm here — to learn from others.

I know. I was about to quit my job and sell the company! :) I will make a big blunder soon enough.....

Focus on my my eyes... see how relaxing they are...
Relax, no mistakes, no missteps, no blunders, no worries... Relax, your eye-lids are heavy, like an Ampeg Fridge stacked on each, you don't need to move those big ol' cabs up the stairs; Relax, let them slide down... easy-peasey does it. You're relaxed, your body floating on a bed of subsonic frequencies gently low-pass filtered ... relaxing further ... deeper ... deeper ...
You will not need to sell the company to me, just send me one of each pedal you make.

My daily/nightly routine:

Ahhhh to sleep Big, perchance to Dream...

If I can find that FX25 PCB I ordered, I think I'll build that up next...
