Envelope Follower Junkie Support Group

Fast question; I really like envelope followers, and I own one, the Digitech Bass Synth Wah (or something, the green one anyway :D), but I can't really get a clean squishy sound out of it, since it always adds some fuzz. I would really like to get an EHX, and I've been looking at the Q-series.

Could someone kinda say something about the following pedals, cost vs. features, how it works with bass etc..

Nano Doctor Q, Micro Q-Tron, Q-Tron and the Q-Tron+

I've heard that the Doctor Q is awful on bass, so steer clear of that one.

As with regards to the Q-Trons, you can't really go wrong with any of them, as they are all basically the same pedal, but some with more/different features.

I would suggest a second hand AF-9. Should run you about $130, and is totally worth it.

Edit: From what I've seen, the Q-Tron+ is more expensive than the AF-9, so it seems to be within your budget.

Might be a tad hard to find here in Finland, I need to keep an eye on the european market.
The Micro Q-tron is nearly 80 € cheaper than the Q-tron+, and 50€ cheaper than the Q-tron, so it would be great. I just wonder what the exact difference in features is between these three.

I wasn't really serious about the Doctor Q, 55€ sounded too good to be true ;D

This thread needs to be bumped. I'm not sure how I never posted in it before, but here's my list of filters I've owned so far:

EMMA DiscumBOBulator
EHX Qtron+
Tonefactor Analogue Filter Red
Maxon AF-9 (twice)
Frostwave Funk-A-Duck
MXR Auto Q
Xotic Robotalk
DOD FX25
Subdecay Prometheus
Chunk Systems Octavius Squeezer
Moog Low Pass Filter

On a whim I just bought a Jacques Trinity. We'll see if it sticks.

Nice collection. Which is your favorite for a super fat, thick, gooey, greasy filter without being overly quacky?

Maxon AF-9, without a doubt.

The only filter I've liked the basic tone of more was an original Mutron and I could never bring myself to buy one considering the size, bypass and power requirements.

The Maxon is small, has a range of tones and is super greasy & funky.

But as I mentioned in another thread, the tradeoff ALWAYS seems to be that the funkier and wetter a filter is, the harder it is to tame in terms of volume spikes. I always run it with a compressor and/or a blender.

I have had three:

Qtron+
BassBalls
Subdecay Prometheus

The Bassballs was my very first pedal, and I definetly enjoyed it, but it was not the sound I was looking for. I really like the Qtron+ a lot, but I mostly use it in combo with my b:assmaster for synthy sounds. The prometheus I like, but I find the filter way to tame for the sound I'm looking for. So I think it's going out the door. :/

To me the most perfect and really the sound I'm after is the filter in Buzzards of Greenhill. Does any one know what filter this could be?

Hehe nice list. Is the jacques an older pedal? The only jacques pedal ive seen was from the 80's and looked like a boss clone type of thing, it was a chorus iirc..

FX25b
GFX25
FX25 (1st and 3rd versions)
Qtron
Syle Green filter
Grinder
Prometheus
Moog 101
BSW
G5
Octavius Squeezer
(mine my might look impressive from a distance, but its basically just a bunch of fx25's hehe)

I just offered my Superdelay+cash towards a photron filter, but the guy didn't bite... I less than 100 away from having the money for an mp201 in my paypal, and a qtron that will be sold this weekend (I guess that kinda sacrilege selling filters in here!).. but I keep thinking about buying the damn photron.. I'm not going to do it though, the mf101 is doing great for me, and with the other foogers on my board I really just need to stick with what is most effective... but goddamn that photron with all it's exp inputs and pretty colors.. *starts scratching neck and lips turn white* must.. have.. filters...

I believe that's a Korg AX300B. But it sounds like it's got a bit of dirt too. And of course Les' basses, lightweight strings and technique all give it a unique vibe.

Of course.

But I wondering how he's got that filter set up.

With my qtron, there is a high and a low setting. On the high setting, only the top end is affected and filter kinda sounds raspy and full of sharp spikes. So when I use it I turn the peak (Q) knob down a bit, but it still sounds like it's really wet and sqelchy, but not syrupy and thick. In the low setting the filter only affects the lows, and therefore does the classic bottom whump whump type sound, which is not at all what claypools filter is set at.

I dunno, it's like the filter is affecting the mid frequencies more than anything. Maybe I need to look for a filter that has a sweepable range, or at least one that affects the mid's?

Or maybe a bandpass filter with a blender?

Scratches brain.

Well, always being kind of quacky rather than thick is exactly why I didn't like the Qtron.

This may or may not help, but my drummer's other band has a bassist who is an endorser for EBS. I tried out his board not too long back and got a somewhat similar sound using a Mulitidrive and a BassIQ.

Hi my name is Maki. I'm a Envelope Filter junkie.

Here's my list.

EHX - Bassballs (twice - one broke, bought it again)
EHX- Q-tron (at one point I was running two one up and one down, and various settings between - I eventually sold one)

This is what's on my board now
EHX - BSM -> Moogerfooger LPF -> EHX Q-Tron -> Digitech Bass Synth Wah -> Boss OC-2 -> Boss SYB-5.

Yeah. I'm a junkie. Almost bought a EP-1 the other day too. Still might buy that. :scowl:

I too am a junkie. Still learning to cope, one day at a time.
