Envelope Follower Junkie Support Group

current list:

70's MXR Envelope Filter (still one of my favs)
Emma
Guyatone Ultron
Frostwave Funkaduck
Subdecay Money Shot
Electronics Studio Modmax Filter

Very nice list. I highlighted a couple thatI had questions on. I'd heard that the EMMA was based on that old MXR filter. Did they sound similar to you?

How were the Ultron and Modmax? I've been curious about those for a long time.

The Funk-A-Duck is a wild little beast isn't it?

I've never heard of the Money Shot. Is that the prototype that later became the Tweaktronics filter or something else entirely? What kind of filter is/was it?

LMAO. You're not helping. I'm also really curious about the idea of using it to take a beat feed from my dj's laptop too.

Hey, I don't usually make unsolicited gear recommendations, but I'm betting you really would dig it. I ended up selling mine, but I liked the tone of it so much that I always make sure I have a filter/phaser combo that can get me close. Great for reggae guitar too. Make your guitar player buy one and then borrow it.

I never played with a DJ, but for a while we split the signal off the mic on the kick drum. It was very cool.

Yeah, they are similar. The MXR is the ultimate in simplicity, two knobs; threshold & attack. The Emma is a little more tweakable/versatile, has more range, but obviously also designed with simplicity in mind. It's got a third knob: width, and an envelope direction switch. I like the Emma a lot. Like the MXR, it has a relatively narrow range of effects, but is great at what it does, plus it's superb for guitar & keys.

How were the Ultron and Modmax? I've been curious about those for a long time.

Ultron is deep. It does a lot of stuff besides simple envelope filter. It's got several knobs & switches, and does a lot of things with an expression pedal. You can select wave forms, and do a lot tremelo-wah and sweeps. I've barely scratched the surface.

Modmax is even deeper. I haven't used it for bass yet. Mostly been playing with drum & synth tracks. A lot of what it does I can do with software, but it can be very analog sounding, and can add a lot of personality and dirt. Again, I've barely touched what it's capable of.

The Funk-A-Duck is a wild little beast isn't it?

Yes, it's a very fun little box! Extremely tweakable without being overly complicated.

I've never heard of the Money Shot. Is that the prototype that later became the Tweaktronics filter or something else entirely? What kind of filter is/was it?

I don't know anything about it's history. Wish I did. I saw it on ebay and snatched it up. It's a fairly conventional envelope filter, with a level control, seperate knobs for low and high ranges (interesting), resonance and sensitivity. I haven't played with it much yet, but it's a very nice pedal. It seems similar to the Menatone Mailbomb.

Hi, my name is Joe and I think I'm starting to develop a problem here...

My current filters:
EHX Q-tron+
Chunk Systems Octavius Squeezer (Agent 00Funk filter)
Early edition DOD FX25
Line 6 FM4
EHX Bass Micro Synth
Electrix Filter Factory
Eventide ModFactor (has a filter, just not particularly amazing)
And I have an EHX Enigma on the way

Used to have:
EHX Bassballs
Dunlop 105Q wah

High on the GAS list:
Moog MF-101
Vintage MutronIII
EHX Bassballs (again)

Out of the lot I currently have, the simple little FX25 is probably my favourite for funky stuff. I have a feeling the MF-101 will be the best way to go for expression controlled low pass and the old Mutron will be the one for straight up funk.

ok, so who's running more than one envelope pedal on their board?

currently i'm using both the ashdown envelope plus and the frostwave funk-a-duck..

My Barge Concepts Grinder takes up the space of two... does that count? :D lol

Just for kicks a while back, I tried an ALL envelope board. Had my main board for goodies like tuner, compressor and "essentials," and had this board for um, envelope. :D My boards have changed quite a bit since this pic though... I've changed everything around a few times, no more envelope board. I love envelope, but a whole dedicated board just wasn't functional enough.

My current filter lineup:
Ashdown Bass Envelope Plus
Barge Concepts MB-1 Grinder
Digitech Bass Synth Wah
EHX Micro Q-Tron
Ibanez AW7 Auto Wah
Mojo Hand Analogue 442 Red
MXR M-188 Bass Auto Q
Subdecay Prometheus

The Prometheus is my most recent addition, so I'm still getting used to it. Next on the list is a 3Leaf Groove Regulator, but I've also been on the brink of breaking down and picking up a Bassballs Nano for quite a while now. I'll probably end up at GC this weekend :rollno: and I'm afraid if they have one, it'll probably have to come home with me. :hmm: lol

Current:

- Musitrontics Mu-tron III
- Haz Labs Mu-tron III+
- Moog MF-101
- 3 Leaf Audio Groove Regulator
- Maxon AF-9
- Broomstick Audio Bottom Feeder
- EHX BassBalls

I'm bidding on a Lovetone Meatball at the, but I keep missing out on them. Trying, unsuccessfully, to snag a bargain.

My Musictronics Mutron is wingin' it's way back to me at the moment after a comprehensive rebuild. Looking forward to hearing the difference.

To me "Lovetone Meatball" and "bargain" have never really gone together... :hiding: When I've ever seen them (and based on reputation), they go for around $500-600 when they show up. Course... I've never played one, so maybe that IS a bargain! lol

The Barge Concepts Grinder might be worth a look... I picked one up because it was based on the Meatball and much more available. I LOVE mine, did some clips for their site, too. :) But I certainly understand, there's just something about having an original. :)

It still amazes me that the Xotic Robotalk 2 hasn't become an extremely popular filter among all the filter junkies on TB. I freakin love this thing. Its really simple to dial in but has two seperate channels that are voiced differently and can be blended together. It has a master clean blend and volume controls for each channel. There are even more tweaking switches inside. Its expensive but so are many other boutique pedals.

The Xotic is a very different flavor of filter then the Groove Regulator which is why I have both on my board. One can't nail the tone of the other at all. the 3Leaf is wet and squelchy while the Robo is more in your face and snarly. The Robo cuts through any mix and is far from subtle. the 3Leaf sounds pretty tame in comparison but I love them both and these two have totally cured my filter GAS which I thought was always going to exist as I was never happy with my various Q-trrons or other filters I have tried.

Give the Robotalk 2 some love!

FX25b
GFX25
FX25 (1st and 3rd versions)
Qtron
Syle Green filter
Grinder
Prometheus
Moog 101
BSW
G5
Octavius Squeezer
(mine my might look impressive from a distance, but its basically just a bunch of fx25's hehe)

I just offered my Superdelay+cash towards a photron filter, but the guy didn't bite... I less than 100 away from having the money for an mp201 in my paypal, and a qtron that will be sold this weekend (I guess that kinda sacrilege selling filters in here!).. but I keep thinking about buying the damn photron.. I'm not going to do it though, the mf101 is doing great for me, and with the other foogers on my board I really just need to stick with what is most effective... but goddamn that photron with all it's exp inputs and pretty colors.. *starts scratching neck and lips turn white* must.. have.. filters...

Well, my list has grown since my last post in march (oh, and I got that Photron, sold the Superdelay, and got the MP201:smug:) Here's the current list:

Current list of envelope followers
Moog LPF (x2)
Robot Factory Photron
Barge Grinder
Subdecay Prometheus
WMD Fatman
DOD FX25 (3 slightly different 2-knobbers)
DOD FX25b
Moog Phaser ('Env' out of the Lowpass or Freqbox into the Phasers 'Sweep' input for envelope phasing)
Paradox TZF (envelope flanging)
Freqbox (I usually keep the envelope off so that it doesn't affect the waveform, and generally use its 'Env out' into other pedals)

Previously owned
3leaf Groove Regulator
Qtron (orig.)
Octavius Squeezer
Korg G5
Digitech BSW
Boss SYB-3
EHX Polyphase

Yep, you got the basic idea of them correct. I can't comment on the Mutron, other than having had a Qtron, and that the Mut/Q are the juiciest and funkiest around, but not necessarily the best for stacking with other effects because it so resonant and can be overpowering.

Grinder:
*Full featured Meatball clone with an extra 'Frequency center' notch (4 settings instead of 3), and 'upgrades' (i suppose some or any-at-all could be subjective) like high quality buffers in the effects-loop, exntended EG range for longer/wider sweeps, anti-pop something-or-other for the footswitch, etc

*Super fat, can sound great without volume spikes, and with resonance dimed it gets pretty wet and spikes a bit, though not as wet or spiky as a Qtron or Mutron. With the resonance lower, you can get some super fat and whompy bass, very similar to the Fatman to my ears, partly by tone and partly by feel; the excellent envelope control contributes to this.

*Exp inputs for wet/dry blend, depth and decay. With an exp pedal plugged into the Decay input, and depth/attack/decay all full clockwise, you can sweep the filter manually. The depth knob will control how much available sweep you have when rocking the pedal; Rolling back the Decay from this position can unlock some killer tones-- imagine quickly sweeping the pedal forward and opening the filter and it follows your foot speed, and then quickly close it and the filter will slowly close based on the decay setting, and it feels like a slow envelope.. drifting down on a cloud.. haha. I just plugged in to make sure I had the correct input, and played with it for a bit.. good stuff.

The thing with the Grinder in my application is that is I don't need a funky filter, so it's become a jack of all trades, master of none. I can get the clean and super fat whompy bass with the Fatman, and for the few funky tunes I can easily get away with one of my other filters... so i struggle with keeping it and taking up the space, or pulling it to make room for something else. Then do I keep it 'for recording'... or sell it to fund other gear? I dunno.. Great filter though, excellent build quality and sound- if I could only have one funky filter, this would probably be it.

Photron
*Similar functionality layout to the Grinder, with an added LFO section.

*Tonally it is comby like the Moog, but with a much more focused resonant range, and much brighter. It has amazing clarity and when engaged but fully open, it does not color the signal at all... very clean in that regard. This tight resonant band allows for more precise, or tighter and more resonant modulation without feeding back.. Like drawing with a ball point pen VS a sharpy; or better yet, like trying to play chords with out getting muddy (or on the flipside, shredding) with thick bass strings VS thin guitar strings.. if that makes any sense at all!

*As an envelope filter: its not as fat as the Grinder and its envelope and corresponding knobs are nowhere near as intuitive. The character is somewhere between the FX25/Prometheus and a Qtron-- it can be set to get whispy at the top of the sweep and can be super snappy with a big bottom-out like the FX25 and to a lesser extent the Prometheus; though it can get very wet and resonant like the Qtron, it doesn't have the wide resonant range so it sounds tamer, and I find it hard to get a fat envelope in the low notes much more so than high notes... as an envelope filter, I bet it kills on guitar.. but for bass, I'd look elsewhere if you're just looking the the end-all envelope filter. For synth stuff its great, has a nice character and is unique sounding enough to compliment the Moog nicely, especially since it has BP/HP as well. If I could only have one filter on my synth board, it would probably be the Photron.

MoogLPF
*Fatness all around. Darker than the others and very coloring, for better or worse (i like it). The fattest for dub and synth bass in general, capable of many tones and easy to adjust between settings with its knob/switch layout. Sounds great as an envelope filter, but I think there are others that sound as good, and may not be as versatile, but are quieter, better bypass, smaller, etc. For synth stuff they come highly recommended for good reason.

actually joe. can i try the FM4 =) and should i send you my 3leaf to give a whirl as well with the pog2?

i've owned the bass balls, microQ,rastop env filter, moog 101 and the original robotalk

currently just own the 3 leaf. i wish i kept the moog, but i wasnt a filter guy back then... not heaps now anyway.

Fightthepower,

Thanks for the insight into those effects!

The Moog is top of my list. I bought the Filter Factory to do big low pass sweeps but I think the Moog will be the best way to go. It's a more convenient size and takes regular power too which is a bonus.

Sounds like the Photron is probably not for me, especially considering how expensive they are.

I think I'll just bite the bullet in a few months time and get a vintage Mutron. I want the classic thick funk tone and it seems that's the way to go.
