envious singer

my bands singer is really good, got a great voice but is really awkward about learning songs an uses the lyrics alot.so me an the drummer learned blackmetal by venom which i can sing and play.so during band practice im singing it an out of the corner of my eye i can see the singer smirking at me an reading along the lyrics. Then later he goes "oh when i sing it ill sing it abit differently too you".He doesnt seem too realise he's not singing it.....

well the annoying thing is the singer didnt want too sing the song despite not knowing it or bothering too listen too it "im not singing black metal songs i hate their vocals".And its a song that suits my voice an the guitarist was surprised how good i sounded cos i normally dont sing other than backing.Im tired of him not learning or wanting too learn new songs whilst moaning he's bored of the set.

yeah i can see why he'd be kinda putout, but i only learnt it cos everyone was up for learning the song but him.his only reason was the names blackmetal therefore it must be screeching vocals.he has a generally bad attitude but has gotten abit better since we had a chat with him.

It's not worth creating a huge argument that destroys the band for the sake of one song, is it?

If your singer refuses to sing certain songs, then you can either (a) accept it, or (b) fire him. But attempting to usurp him will never, ever, end well.

In my opinion, having a great voice can only get you so far as a singer. Being able to learn the words and put in the performance is just as important a part of the role. I'm assuming that you guys haven't gigged yet - what's going to happen when that day does come? Will the singer take the lyrics sheets up with him? Will you really be okay with that?

no weve gigged abit, and he never had words for gigs, but now he's not bothered too learn the words for two songs it shouldnt be hard too learn ace of spades an paraniod.when we bring it up he says well i dont like the songs much so we say make a suggestion he either wants too play acoustic which isnt our style,or an ott firewind song with a simultaneous guitar/keyboard solo bearing in mind no one plays keyboards.an the band wants too play black metal so weve said he can use it as a break before the harder songs in the set which he sometimes doesnt wanna do cos of his voice, which i think is stupid singing for 45 minutes compared too what some people do isnt hard.

I'm assuming that you and the other band members (not including the singer) are all in agreement about the direction of the band. If so, you need to say to the singer "look, this is the kind of band we're in, this is the kind of music that we want to do. If you want to be doing something different, then this isn't the right band for you." Make sure that you are presenting a collective front, so that he knows that it isn't just you trying to push your personal opinions on everyone else.

If he wants to be in an acousticky-keyboardy band then let him know that it will have to be a completely separate project.

yeah we do all have the same vision classic heavy metal/thrash sound with abit of punk, singer has a good voice comes from a slightly different background of tryna make it as a pop singer [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] that his first attempt at making it,we do cover that track abit more rocked up tho, hopefully he'll get better after we have a chat with him.

Honestly, I'd just talk to the rest of the band about firing him and doing bass/vocals yourself. It seems like the guy's becoming more trouble than he's worth, good voice or no. You already said yourself you can sing and play simultaneously for at least that song, shouldn't be too hard to do the others, right? It worked for Lemmy!

ha funny you should say that i just shaved in the lemmy tash today for a laugh (drummer dared me).
when he kicks off i wanna fire him, problem is i need the rest of the band too agree.just funny soon as i sang the song he suddenly wanted too do it.ah well i just wanted a good old moan really im gonna see how it goes an if i can convince the others
