Epiphone Jack Casady Really is All That

Replaced the stock bridge with a Hipshot Supertone last night. I wanted the individual string height and side to side spacing adjustments. They work great and make setup a breeze. The HS has a very solid feel plus it looks good. I'm very happy with it.

Noodling by myself last night I want to say it sounded better, fuller? fatter?. But maybe that's a placebo effect. I'll get a better idea during full band rehearsal tomorrow.

I really got it for the string height adjustability factor. I was very happy with the tone already.

I shared a bill with him once and got to meet him... he’s pretty short, maybe 5’5” at best. The bass is gonna fit him better than a tall slob like me.

Not necessary, and besides, where would you mount it?

Definitely unneeded on a low Z instrument unless you're into hammering the input stage of your amp.

Got my JC 20 back from my tech. today. Had him add some Gotoh Resolite tuners and a bone nut. The tuners have made it so I no longer need to hold the neck up with my fretting hand, a perfectly balanced result that I had hoped for. And the bone nut, well, for those few times I play open notes, it did indeed add to the depth of the tone and sustain, but it was also just on principle.

The tuners have made it so I no longer need to hold the neck up with my fretting hand, a perfectly balanced result that I had hoped for. Very nice! I'll be doing the ultralite tuner thing soon. Is there any particular reason you chose Gotoh over Hipshot?

I will admit I was going for the perfect marriage of form and function. The Hipshots are just slightly lighter, but I wanted to keep the open gear aesthetic of the Gotoh's, not really crazy about the tiny footprint of the Hipshot's, just doesn't look right to me somehow.

Another mod to think about. I guess while I'm futzing with the headstock stuff I might as well upgrade the nut too.

Best price I could was on eBay, and the seller was in my state, bonus. They did seem kinda hard to find. And I had to change them myself from 4 per side to 2&2. Easy enough to figure out.

I put Thomastic Jazz flats and strings D & G sound dead. E & A are not great either. This bass needs rounds, heavy gauge IMO so to resonate the body hard and I'm thinking trying GHS round core heavy gauge. Neck has a lot of wood...

I got one of the Limited Edition Silverburst a few years ago, and upgrading the stock hardware with the Hipshot SuperTone bridge, Ultralite Cloverleaf Tuners, Knobs (all in black to fit the Silverburst look better) & Nut. I’ve used it for a number of gigs from “Americana” to a P-Bass type of tone with it set on its “most electric” settings, and absolutely love it!

I do, however, use Steel strings just like Jack does - I’m not a flat-or-tapewound guy on *this* Bass!

They might be Dean Markley Blue Steels, which is what Casidy uses & recommends in his “Set-Up Instructions” on his Site.
