Epiphone Newport shortscale

Sure thing, here ya go!

Would you kindly show a front picture? I saw someone put ultralites with lollipops on theirs and it looked a little weird, so hoping this looks better as I'll probably do the same!

Sorry @Drucocu ... One more question publicly in case it helps anyone else too! Could you confirm which size these Hipshots are? Hearing about a difference between clovers and mini-clovers on Gibson style headstocks and not sure on hole size.

WHOA, NELLIE!!! I guess Epiphone decided these "platform-modding" basses were so popular that they just raised the prices by $70!!
That's a bummer, because I was seriously considering snagging another and doing some mods, but if Epi thinks they can jack the price up on a bass with production quality issues, then I'm out.

Maybe they said to themselves; "look, if we are gonna send these basses out to the public ready to play, then we are gonna need to get more for our efforts"

I really wish I could have kept mine, but I have too many basses and didn't want to put in the effort to do what needed to be done. I liked it overall though.

Hi everyone, longtime lurker here but first post. I have been in the market for a short scale for a while and was very excited by these when they got announced. Thank you to everyone for the information about QC issues and modification options – it is disappointing that Epiphone missed the mark, especially considering how popular this bass could be.

I was on the fence about getting one but finally pulled the trigger on Sunday before the prices went up, and fully expecting to replace the bridge and tuners (confirm I need the 3/8”) a la Lobster’s video.

Please can someone give specific information on which flatwounds they used? There seems to be conflicting advice on whether this thing takes short or medium scale strings. I am looking at LaBella DTFs.

Thanks in advance and keep the pictures, videos and info coming!

I would (and am going to) put the medium scale strings if using the DTFs...the "normal" 760FS-S I used were all just short...easy enough to fix w/ a razor blade...but still a pain.

Well, it arrived today from Alto Music in NY. First impressions:

I love how it looks. The orange is very cool and the whole vibe is spot on.

The fingerboard was SO dry! It was ridiculously pale, but a few minutes with some oil and a rag and it looked great.

The strings are the worst things I’ve ever played. Just awful. If you buy one of these, have new strings ready to go…

The fret work and finishing was surprisingly good. I don’t think I’ll have to do anything, which is a relief.

The tuners are pretty bad. Flimsy and inaccurate - they will get replaced asap.

The bridge looks great, but is not very practical. As others have mentioned, your setup options are pretty limited for adjusting height. I hope Epiphone improve this in future iterations (but doubt they care).

The neck on mine is very flat. I’ll have to adjust the truss once I’ve sorted the rest of the hardware, but think it will be fine. It is helped by the fact that the nut on mine seems to have been cut pretty well, which is a relief.

I had a quick play, notwithstanding the issues above, and it’s a really fun little bass! Some great Jack Bruce tones can be had, which is always fun. The pickups are definitely out of phase, but I do like the sound of the pickups. I will be in no rush to replace either.

Overall, I was expecting much more of a mess based on some of the posts here and elsewhere. Maybe it’s Stockholm syndrome, but I am looking forward to having a little project on my hands. I am confident this will end up being one of my favourite basses.

It is still poor from Epiphone to be so close to an absolute gem and fumbling it so badly, but there is a gem to be had with a bit of luck getting a good example, followed by some work.

The Serek pickguard looks great. I’d be interested to see how the Newport looks with that style pick guard.

I have been working on my Newport. Hipshot tuners and bridge are on - both very easy jobs and all of the holes lined up perfectly, no modding required. Hipshot sent both sets of hardware with the bridge.

I started to look into the pick-up wiring, in order to fix the phase issue. I took out the bridge pickup and could see the two black wires, but after that I’m at a loss as to what I need to do. I’ve attached a picture, but suspect I’ll need to wait on one of you kind folks to post a YouTube video of the fix…

Of note, the brass mount where the bridge pickup screws into on the treble side pulled out of the body when I reassembled. It’s an easy fix, but still frustrating that the QC is so poor.

Can you post a picture of the pickup wires going to the pickup selector? That's where you need to swap the hot and ground wires to invert the phase.
