Double Bass Epiphone Upright Bass research questions

Yes, I think he was replying to me. We were told at purchase that the crack was likely repaired years or decades ago, and was solid. When we took it in to a luthier for some other work, he saw no issue with it.

When I click on the pictures in post #197 (yours), a diaporama appears, and I see a neck with a crack in picture 10 of 16. That's all I can say.
When you click on pictures of a Talkbass page it shows _all_ of the pictures posted on that page. My guess it's just the way the forum software works... That's why you see the picture of Mike Martin's message along with your's.

I just recently bought an Epiphone upright on Craigslist. Images Below.
Could someone help me ID the model, I am guessing it is a B Series as this thread suggests.
It is in the shop now. The Luthier claims it is not worth fixing as they quoted me a $1500-$2000 to replace the neck entirely and add a new bridge.
My hesitation comes in part because people on craigslist have been offering me on average $1000 for the bass or in trades for high end guitars.
Anybody want to point me in the right direction? Does anybody know the model? Unfortunately these are all the pictures I have and my bass, like I said is at the Luthiers and she is on vacation. The former owner claimed it was from the 40's and that it is an Epiphone.

Per Molly's research it's an early NYC-made bass. If you can spare the money, fix it.
If it's otherwise in decent shape, sinking $1500-$2000 into a neck, bridge, and setup seems worthwhile to me, but I'm a complete Epiphone slut.
Just found the serial number on my B4. Its 1142. Any information would be appreciated. Such a great instrument!
I recently got an Epiphone B5 and would also love to know the date it was manufactured. It was made in NY for sure and it says B 5 on the badge. When I look at the serial number, I read 7897, but that last character is an odd looking 7.
So Thank you Wendy. She says it is 1897. That makes perfect sense. Does anyone know the year a B 5 #1897 was made?

Can you post pics of the tuners and a close up of the tailpiece? The tuners on a B5 were always, in my experience, highly engraved. The tailpiece badge is usually stamped with the model number. Some, but not all, Epiphones have really nicely figured wood used for the tailpiece.

So the story on this bass is this. I moved into my house 26 years ago and the elderly lady across the street had this bass in her living room on a stand. It was her late husbands bass. I got to know the family and one day I asked one of her children if their mom would sell the bass. I was told absoulty not. Well the mom just turned 100 a few months ago and is now in an assisted living home and the children are sorting things out now. I feel honored to have gotten the bass and i am going to have a little work done on it and I plan to play the heck out of it!

I have what I assume by all appearances is a B4. I am curious though because on the epi badge, there is the number "4", but that's it (no B). Though I don't think it is unlikely I am missing something obvious, I did read this entire thread and pored over Molly's website, and it appears that the badge generally always has the "B" along with whatever number the bass is. Also, can't find a serial number anywhere on the bass and looked at all the recommended places: under the tuning keys, end of the fingerboard, bottom of the bass where tailpiece is, no label inside the bass anywhere, and looked hard with a flashlight and by feel...nothin. Maybe based on the pics somebody who knows more could help me out to better identify and confirm it is a B4 and at least ballpark the year made?
