Hey

Do you ever find with more basic/simple amps you struggle with eq it provides? And do you ever turn to an eq pedal or preamp to put infront of your amp to help sculpt your sound?

For instance, I'm using an Orange ad200b and the bandwidths on each tone control are very narrow, which has caused my soundtech problems live, and he suggested to me getting a graphic eq qould help me get the best out of my head ...

he also complained that I used a 4x10 and 1x15 because each cab has a different tone and that matched cabs would be better.. which to be fair I can see his point!


Do you have any thoughts on this?

I dunno, sometimes I wish the Mesa Titan had more eq, but then I start to think that certain basses just aren't that great to start with. But usually it's right on with four simple bands. SVT head as well, same deal.

I've rocked EQ pedals before, but always ditch them after a short time. In your case, you should try one out, it will likely help, I know those Orange heads have a very simple eq, and if the bandwiths are too narrow (unlike an SVT head), then you'll probably be pleasantly surprised.

Not sure about matched cabs philosophy, that seems like faulty logic to me.

A lot of that comes from the audio engineer guys in the Amps section who talk about how having different sized cabs and drivers amplifying the same frequency range can create phasing issues. I'll be honest...it's a concept I totally buy into. I've used mixed rigs many times in the past and never really dug them and I think that's why.

However, one need only look at an average issue of BP and find a ton of bassists who use mixed cab rigs and like them quite well. And I'd never buy that as an excuse from a soundman complaining that he can't deal with your rig. So it's one of these things that means a whole lot to me, and maybe not so much to others. It certainly doesn't affect my enjoyment of a band to see the bass player using non-matched cabs ;)
