Double Bass Ergo megathread part II

Hi,

I am eagerly waiting for a ERGO 5 string to arrive that I have purchased from another TBer.
I will have lots of the usual questions.
But the first thing I want to do is find a suitable mode of transporting it and the stand.

I am looking at gun cases and fishing rod tubes even pvc --as I read here that is being used.

A gun sock for a lite covering perhaps.

I wonder if I can get a measurement from anyone of the overall length. I know it is a 42" scale and then from pics I can imagine the headstock to be about 7 inches and the part past the bridge to be about 4-5 inches so I am estimating about 52" overall.

And the width at the widest point--what would that be about?

What do yours measure please?

Thanks,

Tom

Soon to be ERGO owner.

I picked up the 61" Neet recurve bow case: just about fits the Ergo perfectly. It has just a couple of inches to spare inside. The bowcase is like a real nice gig bag with some foam padding and made of heavy canvas, has a pocket too

Nice! If one like that had room for the stand too...

or someone uses a steinberger system to wear them and then no stand is needed

Next what to do with the stand too?

Thanks noetical!

I have a Neet longbow case with an arrow bag attached to the side. It holds my Ergo 4-string nicely enough, and the stand fits nicely in the arrow bag. Buuut... it's very much a "best I could find so far" kind of solution. The zipper is already fraying, the bag is simply not enough protection for the bass, and during one long road trip/short tour the bass' finish picked up impressions from the texture of the inner lining of the case... it wasn't very hot out, but it was hot enough and there was enough gear packed in the car so that even though the bass wasn't under anything, it was still packed in tightly enough to mar the finish. Ick. Our band swaps instruments a lot during gigs, so consequently there are a lot of instruments getting carted around. Every other instrument has a hard case, and I'm starting to fear for my Ergo's life as it gets loaded in and out with piles of other cases. I've looked and looked for a reasonably priced hard-case solution but I am starting to believe I will need to buy some wood, hinges, latches and tolex and just build the darn thing. I'm no carpenter, not looking forward to that process.

Anyone have any new solutions that don't include rod-and-reel cases?

Peace
Aahz

looks like it might be a just a little too short...

I know flambeau outdoors has a couple of safeshot rifle cases
that are a bargain -- molded plastec
but only 54'' long and has eggshell foam in them

only 25.00 at academy sports

What about a gun sock to slip over it and then inside a case

how long is an ergo? mine (5 string) is coming.

I just got my four stringer today. Pretty instrument. I'ts going to take me some time to get used to the scale.

Major issue though is that the stand is rattling.

This was Jesse's suggestion "There should be a plastic sleeve down in the base of the stand- To push it up and engage the sliding portion of the stand, just slide the top portion up through the bottom of the bass to push the sleeve up.. That should handle it"..

I'm not sure what he means by that. Does he mean the rod that pushes down into the bottom part of the stand? or the part that's going into the bass?(which doesn't seem to be removable

Hi Marc:

My Ergo four-stringer had the cheapo-rattle-y stand too... I think Jesse might be referring to parts or components inside the sliding part of the stand. I messed around with the original stand Jesse sent for quite some time , but it was just too rickety for me...too many squeeks and rattles.

Eventually, I replaced it with a heavy-duty stand of my own design. I used a Pearl tom mount and a decent Pearl tripod. I will post photos and specifics soon.

My EUB4 is about 55" from head to toe, about 3.5" wide and - with the stand attachment - 5.5" deep.

Someday I'm-a-gonna find me a good answer to this here hard case question. :)

Peace
Aahz

Thanks for the numbers aahz

My 5 is on the way from KC MO hope it comes safely to Greenville SC!

Will continue Looking for a suitable gig bag solution but one that can include the stand too--and on a budget!

Found a great inexpensive solution to my ERGO bag needs.

Enjoying the challenge of finding a way to keep from overpaying for stuff...

A paddle bag--

like for a kayak or whitewater raft some such usage.

I looked online at some and they are pricey but just right if you can find the right length.

I only will be carrying my ERGO around locally not touring or packing with other equipment so all I need is a gig bag

I was working right next to our area outdoor sports activity place--white water---canoes --kayaks--rock climbing--- bicycle gear store.

they are very fond of their stuff but I went in there hoping to see something to order somewhere else --and-- found a kayak paddle bag on clearance that is padded and had some scuff marks on it. they had it for $28 originally a overpriced $100 bag.

So I offered them $10 for it. they knew they would never sell it and took me up on it.

Next I remembered years ago having a upholstery shop custom make me a cover for a single 15" bass cabinet and they did that for cheap. So I took the paddle bag to a upholstery shop again while out working (Hey we get to take a break too) ---since I move around at work--well since it was a bit long I had them custom trim and sew the one end where the zipper does not go all the way down. It works great. and they only charged me a few dollars for that. A little time but a fun time doing it.

Not a hard case but a good inexpensive solution to a soft padded case

Well guess I better do some more 'work' now-- LOL.:hyper:

Yes, I'd like to see the pics. I messed around with it a little and it's not making the noises it was. The only thing is I'm not quite sure how it's attached into the bass itself. It rocks from left to right on that post. Is it supposed to do that?

I have been using one of these locally for the last couple of years with no issues whasotever. It's a Neet recurve Bow Soft Case. Available at finer Archery supply outlets everywhere. I stuff a towel in one end to pad it. The stand and cables fit in the arrow pouch.

mine wiggled on the post too...it was simply a "tight fit" mount on that post. It came out pretty easily, and I still have the original mounting hole on the back of my Ergo bass. I mounted the Pearl tom holder below the original mount location:

I used the Pearl 7/8" BT-3 mounted onto the Ergo bass as the foundation of my new mount...

Then I used the Pearl TH88I 7/8" post and gear, and a very sturdy 3-legged base...

super sturdy...

I will post some photos soon...

I've also had issues with a wobbling/rattling stand!
I got my new 5-string Ergo recently and it rocked on the stand out of the box and is to the point it will angle to over 45 degrees and looks like it's going to fall over without support. The stand also obnoxiously rattles to the point that it affects the sound when I plug in and sounds horrible. Had someone help try to re-epoxy the mount piece as I was told to do so only to get in there and find out the stand needed to be replaced and more epoxy won't come close to cutting it. In the mean time this one is still on and is still extremely wobbly, but I've been creative with a few twist-ties to help buffer the rattling. I'm working on finding a new stand to put on (funds are the only issue at the moment, haha), then after a few more fixes to the bridge and adjusting the pickup (one of my strings doesn't come through hardly at all when playing) I'm hoping to get mine in good shape. Not sure what I'll do about the intense buzzing I get for a few of the strings where the second fret would be, though...Doesn't matter how lightly I play the strings. I'm hoping that increasing the height of the action to where it was initially going to be will help :) I'm sure it's going to be a great instrument after all is fixed! :) I'm excited to get this thing in good working order! :D

Yep that neet is a great one that keeps the stand away from the ergo
what do they cost?

$50??

now we just need to find the right size hard case without paying for a ATA case.
