Double Bass Ergo megathread part II

So, because I use that tom mount on the bass, it makes it much easier to fold for carrying, as I can flip the stand around easy.

Here's the bass zipped in the case, and how it fits. I'm just gonna throw in a small bag with my cables, pre-amp and drum key (for the stand).

So how much did that tom mount mod cost?

Here's a link to my mods....

The Pearl BT-3 - the part that attaches to the ERGO currently $17.99USD on Musicians Friend

The TH1000-S - the arm with the joint is currently $35.99USD on Musicians Friend

The Pearl AX-20 - the horizontal clamp that attaches the arm to the OEM stand is currently unavailable on Musicians Friend, but I found it on a site called "The Music Store" for $21.60 USD.

There ya go...

What I am interested in is a ball and socket joint that would mary to the stand.
Then I would be able to rotate the fingerboard toward me or away from me more like wearing an electric bass.

If you used the pearl mount and arm you can position the bass any way you like. Secure too.

I just placed my order for a 4-string in "classic" finish last week! Can't wait! :D To answer some of the above posts; Jesse is going to upgrade the stands!!! :hyper: When I know the exact model and brand of stands, I'll let everyone know.

I have been experimenting with pickups. I found that a Schertler Basik contact pickup (electrostatic, it's a little condenser mic) gets great arco and midrange response and blends well with the internal pickups. There's nothing wrong with what's installed by default, it's a matter of personal taste. It's a less focused sound, as it picks up vibrations through the body.

It sounds best when it is pressed against the body of the instrument, though. Not super-hard, just a little. It makes sense as the range of motion in a solid body isn't likely to be as much as a thin top on a hollow instrument. Another well-known electric cello exhibits the same treatment: the pickup elements are held to the bottom of the bridge by a brass plate, under tension.

My local luthier is helping me with a mod, to mount this pickup to the back of the instrument under controllable pressure (adjustable with screws), and we're going to wire both sets of pickups into a TRS jack. A K&K Trinity preamp buffers the piezos and sends 9 volt phantom power to the Schertler. The Schertler Basik is rated for 10V, so likely no problem. The K&K Trinity is designed for a different microphone, but I've gotten good behavior out of my Schertler plugging into the K&K.

This arrangement allows me to blend both pickups into a single output, or to send them to two separate outputs, and to control the level of each pickup separately regardless of whether they're blended or not. I lose realtime control over bass/treble/mid, but honestly I don't touch those so often, and that kind of EQ belongs on my pedalboard where I can switch it with my feet.

Pickups and tone are a highly personal thing, I stress and re-stress that nothing's _wrong_ with it the way it comes. But I got into this knowing that I wanted to experiment, and it's an excellent platform for such experimentation.

This mod is easily reversible and preserves the original bridge and pickups; only an external strip of wood gets attached to the instrument.

I'll have photos when my luthier is done with it. I estimate 1-3 weeks depending on his workload.

Here's an excerpt from an E-Mail from Jesse: "...first things I plan to do is invest in some better tooling, and source out a superior stand supplier.. I've got my sights set on using Pacific CS800 stands..." They look like a nice double-braced stand to me.

I used the Sound Percussion 7/8" Boom Stand (SP880BS) as the tripod stand for my Ergo.
Very sturdy...and worked well with the 7/8" Pearl tom mount and elbow arm...

Here's the link to the Guitar Center page: Invalid Link Removed

Looks like $43...I think I spent $24-something a while back at the Guitar Center store in Rancho Cucamonga CA...maybe I bought the floor display model?

luthier finished it overnight, less than 24 hours, less than 5 of those spent in his shop. I guess it's not difficult, what I asked for, though several other luthiers froze when I showed them something that's not a guitar.

He decided to use a felt-padded brass plate instead of a wooden structure to hold the pickup on.

I'll take photos this evening. Sounds great!
