FYI, I just received this email response from Ernie Ball:

You can use the entire length. To prevent slippage, flatwounds need a more secure winding due to the silk wrap.

Not sure wrapping 12” of silk around my peg is going to work out, “slippage” or not.

I would think not. Do as posted earlier,. Cut 'em 4" past post and install as you normally would. You'll be good.

You should be okay in that regard as you're not addressing any overwrap. I assume you bought the correct scale length set? Here's the Cobalt install blow-card:

Interesting, I've never done step 3 as shown in the diagram. I put a crimp in the string and trim it before I put it in the hole too. I haven't noticed a diminished "playing experience" doing it this way.

I never fully installed the rationale and one of the few times I actually followed the instructions. Anecdotally, they supposedly have a higher-than-average failure / breakage rate when removed and re-installed. I can neither confirm nor deny. Users have also complained about rust issues.

Well, if a crimp in the string is an easy point of failure, then it makes sense that it'd happen more often when crimped twice.

I just installed SS cobalt flats on my Epiphone Rumblekat. Cut off about 5 inches after each post. Followed the installation instructions. Ended up with 3-4 wraps. The green silk looks nice. The strings sound and feel great on the Rumblekat.

I can’t recall ever doing Step 3…

It looks like a good idea. I’m going to try it from now on.
