Esperanza Spalding

I picked up Junjo from iTunes as soon as I read the Bass Player interview.
Have since ordered & received the new one, too.

IMO, her bass sounds huge on these recordings....she's bad.

I am blown away by a young person like her who is already a true artist. Given her great voice and very pretty face, she could easily go the pop star route. She may yet become a true star simply due to her sheer talent and charisma. The mere fact that I plan to buy her CD, which is pretty much acoustic jazz and latin music, is evidence of her pull since that is music that I almost never listen to.:)

I *highly* recommend the CD.

I saw Esperanza with her band in Cambridge last week. Have to say I was more knocked out by her singing than her playing at that show; not that there's anything wrong with either, but the singing was more impressive in person.

On the CD however, her playing shines more imo. She is an incredibly talented artist, no doubt.

Her new one has been in my player for the last week, great stuff! Huge double bass sound. Great year for female bassist, I just read about Anne Mette Iversen in Bass Musician magazine and need to check her music out too.

HUGH +1

I heard an interview with her on NPR. She's a talented young woman with a good head on her shoulders. Love to see her sing and play at the same time (saw the youtube clips). And I'm totally jealous that she can sing high melodies totally unlike her bass lines. Different melodies, different rhythms.

And I like the music! Really a great new talent. Here's hoping she sticks around.
