Essentials for PC Recording

Dont get me wrong I am a Pc Daw man myself also. I bought a digital workstation because it was cost effective for me. I have been using a PII233/128Mb/UWSCSI/DS2416/AX44 babe until last month. NO midi, lust logic, and wavelab. NO other soft on it. It never crashed(once you learn to to intall funies on a pc it as stable as they come). I used a diferent PIII500 for soft synth.
Although I have recorded great stuff with the PII, it was time to upgrade. The PIII is a office pc with only 3 pci slots and no space.
I was about to upgrade to a AMD1000Mhz/1GB Ram/40-80GB with more mic inputs with flat screen(I have no space at home). I ran into an article about digital workstation.
I though I would give the D1600, and i have never been happier.
You are right it is not for everyone, but it can be cost effective.

Well, you may have noticed my earlier post asking about mastering software, but since this seems to be a related topic.
I gave alot of thought into this PC versus portable decicated DAW routine and decided to do the following:
Tascam 788 for recording etc, Echo Mia (24 bit/96kHz) with digital ins to the PC, and undecided mastering software.
I have spoke to several buddies who are into DAW stuff, and we even had one come out and record one of our shows. He had to bring all kinds of stuff.
For me, the portable for recording PC for mastering seems like the best solution. As previously stated, I can be ready to record in seconds, don't ahve alot of crap to worry about, and can carry it in a gig bag.
Later, I can digitally transfer it to my PC for mastering, adding more track, etc. then burn CD's. I can premaster the stuff on the 788, or leave it alone, whatever I chose.
some of the guys that I know have said that they wished that they had done the same when they went about it.
But as with anything in life, it's what works for you

The D1600 has mastering capabilities so I really don't use the Pc for that 
The pc has better software that makes it easiear to get a great super hot mix but I still like the D1600.
On the pc a Mix what I see while on the D1600 I mix what I hear!!
It makes a diference!! I guess is using your fingers and just your ears.
So far mixes have come out very musical and easy to listen to.
I use the pc as a Software Sampler for.
The pc has better software that makes it easiear to get a great super hot mix but I still like the D1600.
