Essex bass club (part 8)

I took delivery of two basses today, one from Rondo, the SJB-57 LPB with the maple neck (not an Ursa). Interesting, I've only ever bought the 75's....these necks are much more chunky. I'm not sure I'm down with it. On the other hand, the Lake Placid Blue finish job on this one is fantastic and the fit and finish is really good...everything's lined up properly and no unduly high frets, nothing that a little hammer tap can't take care of.

I only got it to get one of the last remaining old headstocks...not because I actually need it. We'll see if I keep it or not. If i do, I may just strip and reshape the neck....or not.

And?

Last year Kurt wasn't switching headstocks either. Patience. I also remember a time when Kurt flat out, ran out of P basses, and most jazz basses due to demand outstripping the supply chain.

I imagine it takes time to order, build and ship from China to the East Coast...

Peace

Hmmmm. How long does it take to reprogram a cnc for a new headstock? How long does it take to a cnc to turn out a neck or body? Not long. Not long at all. The most time consuming thing for SX is the finish. There's obviously very little time spent on fit and finish.

Kurt was promising new shipments six months or more ago. I emailed him about some short scales the first of the year and was told it would be only a couple of months before a new shipment. I never saw them in the models and colors I inquired about.

If 6 months or more is not enough time to replenish stocks, I don't know what is. My understanding is the parent company is quite large and has a lot of capacity to make guitars. If they want to mis-time this shopping season, so be it. I can easily spend my money on other products that are in stock...

I hear where you are coming from. But I'd assume Kurt's order gets in line like any other and bodies have to be finished and shipped on a container ship and on and on.

And without knowing a whole lot more about his business model..I really should not comment more.

And FWIW, it really does not matter to me when he gets in what he gets in. I can wait and if I see something I like...well, you know.

But on the other hand, I can also understand the timing with Christmas too. But that is with the basses. Rondo still has about eleventy billion guitars on the site. And I'd suspect, like many other music shops, the skinny little 6 string thing makes up the lions share of Rondo's sales.

Peace

Well, I went and bought one of the last SJB-57 LPBs on the Rondo website last night.... at least I hope there was still really stock left!

This to go along with the "kwilted" maple (photoflame) redburst SJB I have. Hoping the nuclear orange on the neck isn't too severe.

I keep checking the front porch, but it's not here yet! :bawl:
:p

Lovely, almost ordered this one for the neck only! took a 75er instead.
I wasn't home yesterday when they rang my doorbell with it :crying:
Hopefully today...

Hi, mi name is Felipe Opazo, i'm from Chile and i got my first SX Jazz Bass on a trip to New York City a couple months ago after reading all the good things y'all have been saying about these basses. Needless to say, i LOVE IT. This is a great bass for the price, i've been playing with it on live shows and also recording some demos and i've only received good comments about the sound and the looks. In fact, many of my fellow bass players in Chile (i work mostly as an arranger/composer, but i do play the bass in some bands and some other gigs) are now interested in getting SX basses.
I Got mine in July, and the only thing i did when i came back to Chile was that i payed for a pro Setup and i changed the stock strings to DR High Beams.
I got it for $159 and i'm trully happy with it...
I recorded a mini test a couple weeks ago (the strings aren't new..but anyway..) pluggin the SX directly into my Macbook Pro (without using my Mbox 2 Pro or any audio interface, just the computer mini-plug audio in), that way what you're gonna hear is just the sound of the bass (maybe a little compression from the computer, but no virtual amps, no external EQ, nothing).
I don't know how to upload the audio so you can hear it, so any advice on how to do it would be welcome. Oh, sorry for the sloppy playing, i was just messin around...

I bought an Aguilar Tonehammer last week and i already got the chance to use it Live in 2 different situations (a new Hip Hop Band i'm in and a gig as a musical director/bass player backing up different singers from a Professional Music Institute where i also teach - not bass -) and the SX sounded great both on a SWR Workingman rig (4x10 cab) and a GK RB800 and Schroeder 1x12+1x10 rig.
In fact, since i got the SX i've been using it more than my 1998 Warwick Streamer LX (5 String), even tough i love that bass (it's my baby hehe).

SX are great basses for the price, obviously i don't pretend them to be better than a MIA Fender or a boutique bass, but hell, for less than $200 you got a good sounding bass.

This is me with my SX playing with my funk band CELESTE

I just got one of those the other day (I had posted about it) but I'm almost positive I'm sending it back because there's a chip in the paint at the neck pocket. UPS must have dropped it and jolted the neck. Kurt's already given the ok but given that this is one of the last, I'm still going to give it some thought. I'm one of those who doesn't like the new headstock and my SX folly may soon be coming to a close.
Sorry to inform you though geoff_in_nc, the tint on the neck IS full on nuclear orange and the neck is much chunkier, as I stated in an earlier post, than the blocked necks on the SJB-75s I've always bought. It's more like an old P bass neck, the era where they had a really deep profile back to front. On the other hand, the finish is gorgeous. It's also a very light instrument. The ash 75s I've played have always weighed a ton. Some more than others, so there are trade offs between both instruments.

It was her sneakers I noticed. :)

As a former professional photographer, I love that picture! The composition is great, the lights frame it nicely, the bass player is in the foreground, and of course, the lovely lady in the middle. I also like the way the drummers head peeks over the bass neck.

Great choice! You'll love it . . . and the orange issue is easily remedied:

I had the same exact experience-- I took my SX P-Bass out of the box, and a piece of paint fell off, right at the neck pocket! :D
If I were you, I'd just ignore it. Kurt has a great record of customer service, but if you exchange the bass there's a chance that you'll get one back with a new headstock. I say this not at all out of personal experience, but because there aren't many old headstock specimens left, they're going quickly, and things have a way of happening.

Ok, i found out how to post an mp3 here.

So, this is my SX TEST, sorry for the bad playing, maybe i'll upload something better later.

i tried to feature different "settings", so what you're gonna hear is:

1) Just the bridge Pickup
2) Just the neck Pickup
3) Both Pickups full volume
4) Slap with both pickup at max

As for the tone i forgot what i used hahaha but i think it's close to full tone (if not full tone).

After the first Slap (i'm not a slapper) part i just started messin' around, sorry 4 that.

I hope you can get a picture on how this particular SX bass sounds.

Thanks.

P.S: As i told you before, i plugged in the SX directly into my Macbook Pro, so no Audio Interface or virtual amp was used.

P.S II: If you hear some fret buzz it's because it's been 3-4 months since i got the setup .
