It makes me wonder if taking a broken electric cello and resetting the neck angle (beyond my skills!) and repositioning the bridge for a 34 inch scale would work.

Yes, I think both. I found all these adaptations of standard electric bass pu's designs to get me envisioning how I will go about it. I'd like to assemble my own version instead of buying one of these products, and the spacing on these is for wider upright bass necks anyway.

I am moving forward with this hybrid concept and will develop a solution based on primarily electric solid-body technology. So, a 34" scale bolt-on neck w/standard 2X2 hs and a solid body designed to accommodate bridge, string anchoring & pu positioning.

I found this example on eBay - a direction I'm frankly not interested in.

I just checked it out, it looks to be geared for a standard carved bridge - more of a contact pu under each foot. I'm probably not going that direction but thanks for your recommendation!

I remember seeing somewhere an adaptor for a 3/4 upright bass that replaced the tailpiece and bridge with a one piece assembly that changed the scale to 34" and allowed you to use full scale electric strings... It used a standard bass bridge (I think).

Not sure what this has to do with anything, but this thread reminded me of it.

I'm looking forward to seeing this built.

A bit more conceptualizing the body. I like the Ampeg Scroll cutaways so will work that into the design. (the pointy dashes) along with sculpting (scallops) and will curve the front to follow the neck curvature. I think the bridge will be a simple curved piece of wood w/the piezo underneath, and the string anchors string-thru (body).

Started work on the neck/hs - so far so good

right side (penciled line) of the top "soft V" detail isn't started - still have the neck to rasp

Thread awaken! Time to visit the back-burner to see what's cooking. I just ordered a nice slab of variegated/quilted maple to make the body of this UEB thing. I will cut and reassemble it in 3 lengthwise sections arching similarly as the cello fingerboard. It's thin [15/16"] but I think it will work for my needs as maple is a pretty hard wood. I haven't touched it (the neck - still needs a bit more work) since my last post but working on the body will re-energize me to get it going.

Just ordered 4 black NOS Sperzel locking tuners for the UEB for a nice price. ($16@ eBay) If I decide to incorporate ultra-lite tuners on a build, these are what I use. (made in Cleveland Ohio) I doubt if there are lighter tuners and these work well while looking great. An example, like the Schaller 3D bridge of a really good design both in function and aesthetics. All hardware on the bass will be black (like the ebony board) which should work well as a visual counterpoint to the pretty maple.

The maple and Sperzel tuners both arrived today. Here's a couple pics of the wood mocked-up w/the neck/fb - judging from the rough state, I think it's going to be really cool looking. (hope you can make out the pencil tracing) Will start cutting it out tomorrow.
