Sean Hurley, [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]’s bassist until recently, shared his hottest tone secret in episode 4. He feels the need to really bring his tone to the gig, unless the artist specifies something different. Flatwounds on a vintage P bass is the sound for him, and he had his light-bulb moment when he put on a set of .043–.104s, a not-so-common set of gauges. And the very first thing he has to do is put Vaseline on a cloth and rub it a few times up and down each string to put “about a thousand gigs” on the strings. Hurley claims that brand-new flatwounds are “such a contradiction.” Considering the tone he gets on every album he plays on, I’m trying this tip immediately.

Yes indeed - I agree they take a while to open up. It’s the damn fundamentals that seem to be buried under all that new-string resonance that takes so long to settle down. I don’t have the same level of patience I had 7 years ago. :smug:

Oh, and about the tomato thing, I got yer tomatoes right here. ;)

Ahhh yeah. What's that buzzin? I think you need to adjust your action Sean.
Nah mate. It's just a mosquito stuck to the Vasoline on my E string. I'll smear my board with DEET before we go on. It does wonders for the Rosewood and it's cheaper than that formula 64 and a half.
Eucerin.
Imcerin John. It's going to be my hot tip for episode 5.
Well I hope you have enuff for everyone. The flies are real bad tonight.
Yeah, no worries mate. I've got a good stash back on the bus.
Listen I tell ya what Sean. You ought to try Oil of Lemon with enhanced PMD concentration. I'll give you the tip here's the link bro. What to Look for in Bug Repellent
Oh jeez cheers mate.

Hi diegom. Just fooling around. I can't take this topic seriously at all.

A professional artist admitting to something, I find, farcical, screams to me to make equally farcical statements. Covering your strings with grease, fat, cream or whatever, which would attract dirt, grime, bacteria, fungus and whatnot has to be a joke. Don't you think a mosquitoe would stick to a greasy vaseline coated string?

It would get on your hands, inside your case etc. The questionable benefits are outweighed by the negatives. Why not coat your fretboard with insect repellant? Smear sunscreen over your oly white P bass to stop it yellowing? Why? Why not a piece of foam or retro fit your pickups with a half dead magnet?

I guess it must be me who's missin somethin.

I apologise to those I may have offended.
