Euphonic audio CXL-112 vs. Wizzy 112

Seems like cxl112 love kinda died out, but I've not really found anthing better for me for years now either. I've got 2 stacked on the sides with a little traynor YBA1a on top for a perfect fit, a perfect sound that's ooh soo warm and soo much bigger sounding than it looks, the size of these cabs does not match the sound. I must say the warm mids comes from my strings, bass and amp and the CXL112's portray them perfectly as a good cab IMHO should.

Passinwind, I'm very curious about the mods you've done, what are they? Why?

Fun Fact! the POD's first bass cab modeling setting is supposed to be a cxl112.

I swapped in a lighter neo tweeter and made my own crossover to go with it. Why? No good reason really, that's just how I roll.:cool:

I also just recently sold the cab to a friend who doubles and needed a good cab for upright. Still sounds great, and served me really well for many years.

I am a doubler and it can be confusing and expensive to find the right sound. I suggest two seperate rigs.

for electric bass the tweeter speaker combination is without peer.
for upright the wizzy coaxial speaker sounds more natural.

I use an Eden E12 combo amp with a wizzy cone speaker for upright. It is slightly underpowered at 80 watts but at $300 it is a great deal and it sounds great.

I use whatever is available for my electric gigs usually a a 800 watt head paired with a 4 x 10" cab with a tweeter to cover all styles of playing.

I tried getting one rig to handle both, never worked, two different animals and one always suffered.

Interesting. I have found that the CXL-112 seems to pair well with anything. My gut feel is that the CXL-112 is so flat that it brings depth to the other cab but lets the other cabs signature sound come through.

That said, I still prefer my wizzys (wizzies?). :bassist:

I had a chance to play through an EA CXL-112 this weekend for a few minutes. I can't say that it really impressed me with it's low end. Although, to be fair, I was using an amp that I am totally unfamiliar with (older SWR SM900). I just wish I could have had my Epi UL-110 there to compare the two cabs side by side to see how they compare/differ.

From the comments that I've heard about the CXL-112 the low end seems to be on the tight side of things, but takes EQ really well, so don't be afraid to bump-up the bass boost if you want more lows.

I own both. the CXL goes WAY louder. I have the CXL in my car and it does every gig. Uneq'd it sounds a bit lean in the bass and too forward in the mids. So if you don't have any tone controls or don't know how to use them, I wouldn't get a CXL. That aside, with proper eq it's the only cab I've ever had that does as well for electric and upright. And it's not a compromise for upright. With a bit of a bass bump and take away some mids and it is as good as anything for upright. I've got a second CXL that I might sell because in 3 years I've never had a gig that one didn't cover. Even loud electric.

I'd be using it with a GK MB-200. I don't think tone controls would be an issue (the GK is very flexible for what it is), but power might be. Since these are 8 ohm cabs, I would only be pushing 140 W into it. Did they ever offer a 4 ohm version?

The other issue is price. The shop that has it is asking $500 for a used CXL. That seems a bit much going by what they sell for on TB.

That's pretty good if it is local. I've seen them go used in Ottawa for $600 :eek:

Check out what the shipping will be from the states before deciding if it is too high ;)

Ya, it's at SpaceMan Music. It might be a good price for around here since used higher end equipment is kind of rare, but I'm sure I can find one for less since I'm not in any rush. Maybe I'll go back in next weekend and see if I can bring my head in to try it out again.

You'll probably be disappointed in the CXL112 with that little power. There is no 4 ohm version.

Another chance to show my EA CxL112E cabinets:hyper:

I bought a pair, NOS, last year. The first thing I did was plug them into my stereo (Yamaha PC2002M and NS1000M) to loosen up the cones. I'm not sure if it works but it gave me a chance to compare them with other speakers. The first thing I noticed was how much midrange they have with the horns at about 50%. Definitely, not a scooped sound. I can't compare them to the wizzy cones but they are not lacking in mids. It may be the reason some say the CxL can be EQed to sound like a wizzy. As you can see I power them with a Sadowsky SA200 going for a Jazz bass on bridge pickup, treble knob rolled off 80%, sound. With only about 250 watts some might think it's not enough power but I can get the cones moving. Even though the Sadowsky uses EL34 tubes, the closest I could compare this rig would be to a 2X12 blackface Fender Bassman only a lot louder and articulate.

I owned a CLX for a bit and loved it. Sold it to a buddy who found a second one and runs them with a Walkabout and it is simply fantastic tonwise and very easy to transport the whole rig.
