Euphonic Audio. Scha-weet!

Has anyone looking to match the EA to a second cab tried using a 1X15"? I loaned my 1X10 to a friend to use with his Bag End 1X15 and it was sweeter (clear and clean) than the Eden 4X10 and Bag End. And bottom heavy enough to cut it on a loud blues rock gig.

I'm leaning to going with just that setup, it's small and light!

I was running my pair of VL210's (4 ohm cabs) one on each side of a K1 Crown @550 watts/side and found the clip lights on quite often. After an upgrade to a Crown K2 @ 800 watts/side into 4 ohms, the problem has been resolved. The K2 also seems to be running a little cooler than the K1. Maybe this is a result of not being driven so hard?

I called EA today and they called me back within a few hours. That's service. I explained my problem (see previous posts in this thread) and they offered several solutions:

1) EA would change the woofers in my cab and wire it from 8 to 4 ohm.
2) Get a second cab.
3) Get much more power. Even thought the Eden is 800w, EA cab is flat to around 32Hz where's most cabs--SWR, Eden,etc--- not get nearly as low. Hence, the amp is inefficient and distorts at a lower volume when compared with another cab.

So I'll probably return my Eden WT-800 head and go with separates (oh no, another tone quest: Kern, Aguilar, EBS preamp; Crown, QSC, Stewart, Crest), another head like Ampeg SVT Pro3 which was recommended by EA, or less likely get a more conventional cab like Eden 4x10XLT ...or check out EBS Fafner and cab 4x10 .....or....whew, too many options.

Just wanted to revive this thread with a copy of a response to a newgroup question posed to me. I needed to have some time with the EAs before I got too enthused; I think you need that for perspective.

...I would like the proverbial responses such as
> effeciency, type of sound etc. but bottom line is if you had
> to would you buy them again?

ABSOLUTELY!! I was putting off writing my impressions until I had a chance to play them in different venues, and to get over the "honeymoon effect" -- I've now had the rig on about eight gigs and with six different basses in three very different club situations and am more impressed than ever.

Just for the record, I have the Euphonic Audio 208 and 210 cabs, running parallel off a Crown CE1000 (1100w) and Eden Navigator.

I am delighted with the bass tone and sound I am getting because these speakers deliver the sound of the bass I'm playing rather than impart their own coloration. They have a very tight bass response, no flab or flap, just solid and real right down to the B string. Smooth highs, no crackle, just crisp, and the intelligibility of my bass signal (mids) is much better. The first couple gigs I played with them, my guitarist (12 feet away) complimented me on lines I was playing-- the same lines I'd been playing for 6 months, but he had apparently never heard them so clearly. The speakers seem very accurate, and slight tweaks on my bass or preamp EQ are easily heard.

Believe the descriptions at the EA web site: they do have a wide dispersion pattern, unlike past experiences I noted, that when I got off axis from my cabinet, the clarity faded. Not with the EAs. I have been using some slight effects from a BBE 362NR in my signal chain for the past couple years-- I liked how it tightened up the lows-- the first gig with the EAs, first, I realized the NR circuit was cutting some of my highs (never heard that before) and that I no longer needed that tightening effect.

Yes, the EAs are not as efficient as some cabinets... from specs, they are not as inefficient as the Acmes, but they aren't that bad. I do clip occasionally, but then I am competing with a set of electronic drums, keyboards, guitar, and four vocalists -- I could probably get away with the 1100w but may look for a little more headroom.

I don't think they would necessarily be everyone's cup of tea-- if you like that fat midrange bump and typical bass amp speaker coloration, you may miss it with the EAs. But if you want accurate sound that you can fatten up or lean out using EQ, and like a studio-like
intelligibility and clarity in the mix, check 'em out.

I have the EA 2x10 and it sounds beautiful. I AB'd them again (while preamp hunting)with SWR Goliath III and Eden 4x10XLT and they sound so much nicer and even, IMHO. Nice dispersion as stated above. It's irritating to move several feet off axis and notice a change in tone emitted from the cabinet; this doesn't happen with the Euponic Audio. BTW, they are heavy! Big, big magnets!

EAs are definitely inefficient. My Eden WT-800 head bridged was clipping. However, a dedicated power amp like Crown or Stewart provides ample headroom. BTW, the 700w from a Crown Macrotech (? model 1202)I tried at the store blew away the 800w Eden in terms of power and headroom.

Mr T asked a great question about the EA vs the Acme. From everything I have read/heard and now experienced (Acme B2), the EA and Acme are very similar cabs except for one minor difference, the Acme B2 sells for $480 and that includes shipping. Any EA owners out there who would be willing to risk the return shipping to try an Acme B2 against their EA?

I'm now using a 208 and a 110 EA together with my sunn 1200S head. I played an outdoor gig an my 208 alone was plenty plenty loud to cover the stage and immediately in front and the rented PA covered the rest. Once I added my 1 10 to it, it was a lightweight monster. Now I will not say that Acme's are not as good sounding, but they do not have an equivalent of a 2x8 cab.

BTW, although the sunn 1200 s may not be as audiophile or "well built" component wise compared to GK, Fafners etc. they are amazingly loud and clean and I have never never ever had a problem with not having enough umpphhhh to carry any setting. I will use an SWR 2x10 to help beef up the bottom end and add a different timbre to the highs of my rig, but the ea's alone or the 2x8 and the SWR are absolute killer together with the Sunn.

I use a Rumblefish 5 string and have recently purchased a Pulcinella Level 5 that both sound GRRRRRRRReat with these rather easy to transport cabinets and such.

A Happy LKaye.

BTW,

I bought a second 208 last weekend in Toronto. Man does 2 of these guys sound tremendous together. As long as you have plenty of clean power pushing them, I can't see using anything else. They're very portable, sound great, have plenty of bottom end and are more than loud enough.

Interestingly enough (or not), I like the sound with both of them on the floor, not stacked. You have a couple EA's don't you? What's your preference? I like the 110 on top of the 208 when I had that combo going, but prefer the two 208's on the floor with the woofers stacked on top of each other rather than parallel to the floor.

I'm also going to get a new woofer for my 110 to get a sound a little more similar that I can use for the very smallest of gigs I have, usually once a month a piano bar.

Has anyone tried the Clarus 5 pound, 300 watt head out?

LKaye

I know what you mean. When I first went out with the VL-208 stacked over the VL-210, especially in one regular club, I liked to put the 208 down, alongside, with the bottom handle extended to place it at an angle. Seemed that I could hear better since the "stage" (read "floor") depth means I'm standing on top of my gear. Lately, though, I've stacked them in most situations, usually due to lack of stage room. Now that I have 2 VL-210s the top cab is closer to ear level.

The little Clarus is quite impressive; I took it out once with the VL-208 and it delivered the goods just fine. It was a low volume gig (coffeehouse style) and was fine; I took it as an alternative to the Contra just to try it out. It seemed louder than the Contra even though, with the EA, I was only pushing 120w vs. 200. However, with electric at home, getting too loud results in distortion, of course. Driving two EA cabs (200w/4 ohms) at home it is pretty loud, though if I'm going out on anything requiring 2 VL-210s you can be sure I'll be bringing the Kern/QSC to drive them.
