EV EVM 15L speaker

got an offer for a portaflex cab with one of these speakers in it

cant seem to find an ohm and wattage for it

anyone know?

different websites have said a couple different things

I have discussed some of the unique properties of this driver line in the past. The 400 watt rating is not the same "RMS" or continuous average power that many manufacturers currently use. Probably closer to between 250-300 watts when comparing to more modern rating methods.

While the ratings changed between the earlier SRO models all the way through the EVM proline, the actual changes in the driver's themselves were pretty small. It's mostly rating method differences along with the ratings becoming less conservative over the years.

If you like the tone, and can handle the weight of the cabinet, it's a great driver.

It's likely to sound quite different. You should try it to see if it suits YOUR tastes.

FWIW, I really like the tone of a EVM 15B cabinet and a TL606
These drivers have great tone (to me) but do not have the ability to play loud in a rock band as a single driver cabinet

It's likely to sound quite different. You should try it to see if it suits YOUR tastes.

To slightly change the OP's query: I've a 15" EV Force (4 Ohms) in storage, pulled out of a old, heavy Peavey cab. I've not been successful hunting down the specs for this driver. Mr. Horse, do you know where I might find these numbers?

Yep - I just found that myself. (Thank you for your search.) For what it's worth, this Peavey speaker cabinet was purchased used in Australia about 25 years ago. I'll have to pull it out of storage (assuming it's still there - a long story, that). Thanks again.

P.S. I just noted you're from Crandon. I grew up in Green Bay - we wouldn't mind moving back to WI one of these days.

from what I remember, they came in 200w and 400w versions, yes 8ohm.

My opinion is the same as Jim C's, awesome tone, but run out of steam too easy in todays music.

I don't know which Portaflex you're looking at but back when the B15-Reissue (100w version) came out, Jess Oliver was recommending the EV15L as great upgrade over the stock 15.

There were three different vintage 115 Portaflex cabinets. The last revision is thiele based, similar to a EV TL606. The EVM15L was used in those type of EV cabs.

I have a pr of them in an old Sunn Sorado cab. It is my favorite cab for bigger, louder gigs. These speakers have the best mid-range of any 15" speaker I've used. The Eminence kappalite 3015 sounds similar but not quite as rich

I had 2 115 cabinets based on those drivers; used them for a couple of decades. They are well built, have enough mids to work fine on their own (at least for my taste), and a big enough magnet to give you a hernia when you lift the cabinet. They don't have near the excursion that a modern Eminence can give you, but if you have a couple of 'em, it's enough.

The EVM15 series (B and L) came in both 200 watt and 400 watt versions. I'm not sure how to tell one from the other when there is no label on the back of the magnet.

That's what you'd think - but actually the EVM 15 will be brighter and a 4x10 will seem deeper/bassier.

After I blew the original speakers in my Fender Bassman 215 cab back around '81, I loaded it with (1) EVM15L and (1) EVM15B. I was using that cab up through approx. 2015 and both drivers have been reconed at least once. I have since retired that cab to save my aging back.

I love that speaker, have my 2x15 loaded with the Mesa Black Shadow version, great on louder stages but not really dynamic enough for most of my quieter gigs these days so it is in reserve for bigger shows and outdoor shows.
