Well, I haven't read the whole thread, but I just tried a set of EP's on an older 4-string Poellmann that was set up for Jazz. I'm a die hard Obli user. I can appreciate why Jazzers like EP's, but I found the G kind of crass under the bow, especially in the upper register. Overall, I find they have a harder attack, which might be good on many basses, but at the cost of nuance. I would probably want them if I were playing primarily in larger ensembles - jazz or orchestra, but I wouldn't want them in my drummerless trio, or in a chamber situation. That said, I don't mind the rolling of the Oblis, I actually kind of like it. Overall, the EP's do come very close to the feel and sound of gut, but are a little stiff for my taste. Perhaps I should try the light gauge set.
