I just went back to the Belcanto G and Pyramid Soloflex D with Spiro A (Weich) and E. No problems with my pick up, the Belcanto G sounds full and gut-like...and the D, which matches well, has already been on for more than 6 months and sounds as good as ever. No advantage in staying with the EP's. They sound good but no better than what I am using now. I play pizz only.
I'll keep the EP's for my King which is out on loan.

I took them off today :hmm:

After much thought, and basically struggling through a trio gig to try and get the EPs to respond the way I'm used to (for about 6 months), I acquiesced. I stopped trying to be different. They're great strings, but they're not for me. I'm done trying to make that work.

So I put my Spiros back on, and just got done playing for 2 hours, mostly arco. . . . Wow.

What the hell was I thinking?

How did it go?

I think I hear what you're saying. I always feel that the deck is stacked just a little more in my favor when the Spiros are on there. Maybe they make me sound better than I really am? :bawl: I can live with that, I guess. The EPs are great strings. So are most of the other strings I've tried over the years. But when I need to play balls-to-the-wall jazz in 2008, the Spiros win.

While the EP's were on my bass, I guess I refused to admit how good it could sound with Spiros. Alot better than I cared to remember. I said in an earlier post that Spiros really made my bass easier to play, and I think that that's what I've been missing. The EP's are punchy, very loud (at first), and big, but they really need to be babied a little (at least on my bass). I can't keep trying to change my touch and my ears to get MY sound out of these strings. I guess that I was surprised at how good the arco sound was. But now, come to think of it, bowing Spiros was working beautifully for me for about the past 10 years. If it ain't broke. . . .

Geez, I can relate and agree w/ everyone's post on this thread today!

I'm hopelessly torn btwn EP's all accross and my Spiro Mittel / SF G combo:eek:.

Like 'em and dislike 'em both for different reasons.

I have the EP's on now and I keep thinkin' I'll ultimately go back to the Spiros like everyone always does. Then I get lazy 'bout changing and do a more arco heavy gig... LOVE EP's all over again and also realize, "well they don't suck for piz thru the amp either".

On the flip side when the Spiro/SF is on the bass I say "well now I'm home again, why did I ever leave. Power, punch, superior pitch moduulation and pressence thru the amp. Then when my left hand starts feeling a bit shreded after a gig packed run and the lower strings are scratchy on the faster arco things, I'm hankering for those supple, great bowing EP's.

I still like them too, hard to tell I guess from what I've been posting! Last night, like most nights, I loved them. Other nights I have a harder time with them.

Anyway, they're staying on there for awhile at this point; I haven't got the break in the gigs for burning in a set of Spiros. The EPs still sound better than most strings I've used.

I just finished the first week with these strings on. Every time I pick up the bass I think, "Wow these strings are the #@$%!" They bow well and the jazz pizz sound is dark, but defined and theres lots of snap. I'm coming from Eduoxa's, and I think they're in the same league.

....Then, after about an hour of playing, I'm thinking they've lost some focus and are harder to play...much more thuddy.

Anyone else experience this?

I'm dealing with it. One thing I've found is that there is a MAJOR difference when I move my right hand towards the bridge a bit (compared to other, more forgiving strings). They just sort of snap into focus. A little extra length on the endpin helps facilitate a better pizz sound. They also like a pretty aggressive attack.

Still diggin' them. Not the easiest string in the world to play, but they sound great when I put in the effort.

I concur with all of that. Too bad for me that I'm only 5'5"....

I'm still enjoying them as great 'do all' hybrid strings, but after about 3+ mo. playing time (on 2 diff basses), while there is still plenty of tone in them, I can hear that they've lost some of that impressive volume already. It would be nice to get atleast 6 mo. of optimum sound and playability out of them, or any quality (read expensive) string for that matter.

I use Kolstien Heritage strings which are also Perlon core hybirds,(which I quite like BTW ) .My teacher feels that these type of strings need to be to be bowed closer towards the bridge compared to steel core strings in order to get a decent sound. The sound seems to choke closer to the fingerboard.
