Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part I

I switched out my EP G for an Oliv G, and the rest are EP's too... I like it very much. I even had an Oliv D on there, but the difference in gauge was the only hang up.. which I could have probably gotten used to. The sound was very big.. my bass seems to prefer lower tension D's and G's.

I attended the Ray Brown Memorial Bass Workshop led by John Clayton (in conjunction with Barry Green's Golden Gate Bass Camp) this weekend. Such a great and warm guy. I got to play John's old german bass with the Evah's on it. That bass was very LOUD! As Richard Duke put it, you could dry your hair with the amount of air that bass was pushing. Anyways, I was too busy checking the feel of his bass than to notice the strings. It sounded great. We were in the middle of going to lunch so it was probably a little extra loud without an endpit and was just standing on the floor with the end-pin collet. The stage floor was certainly shaking. I might give these strings a try.

Can someone else compare them to the Flatchromes? I think I will still keep my Stark E but maybe the A and D strings would be good.

I've never played FCS so I can't compare them to the Evahs. But I'm hard pressed to think of a string whose feel changes as drastically over the course of its lifespan as the Evah Pirazzi. They felt quite stiff to me when I put them on a year ago, and they took their sweet time softening up. But they eventually became quite flexible, with nice tactile feedback, and I think if they were any softer at the outset, they would probably feel too flabby now. It would be easy to deem them "too stiff" for some players upon installation, but they break in nicely, IMHO.

I would agree with all said here about the Evahs... I only tried the FCS for a day before switching them back out for medium Flex 92's a long time ago. Both of those are quite a bit lighter than Evahs.

Also I notice these things change character often... soften up over the course of a night, then be stiffer than usual in the morning. They seem a little more susceptible to weather changes than most I have experience with.

I could imagine that Hawaii makes them loose all the time, but it might make anyone loose after awhile.

This, I think, is what makes them such a good match for Olivs on the top - the same kind of tension and organic response to the environment. But tuning was very stable - as good as the Spiro reds I have on at present. (For the record the Oliv D&G I've had on for over a year, while susceptible to temperature and humidity, are very predictable. Luckily we don't get a big spread of either here in L.A.)

put my new set of EPs on last night

as i put them on one-by-one, i a/b'd (well, more like a/c i suppose since it wasn't the exact same string) them with the spirocore mittels that were on the bass and noticed that they sounded almost exactly as "alive" as the spiros sounded after having been on the bass for about a year.

i also noticed that they feel softer and more comfortable under the fingers than the spiros, although i was running a stark e and that's just a bloody uncomfortable string, period. i believe that's been noted here before. (both the comfortableness of EPs and the uncomfortableness of the stark spiro e...thing's the size of a bloody pencil...)

That sounds interesting, how is it working out for you? Is it really a good mix, what about under the bow?

What do you think the Evah Pirazzis are work for me? I currently using Obligatos and here the storry about the Obligatos and me: When I installed as new set the sound was metalic like a new stainless steel slab stings, after that sounds good,3 moths later sounds amazing good, and another 4 monts later (now) sounds nasal. I use 6 year old handbuild master instrument (pretty bright sounding) and use pretty low action. For me the inportant questions about EP strings are: Has enough sustain? The Tension is not too mutch? I dont like tight strings.

When I had Evahs on my bass, I had that combination and it was wonderful pizz-huge sound, and the Oliv G has got a great consistency going up the fingerboard. Arco, there was clearly a difference going from the D (Evah) to the G (Oliv), but it was manageable from my perspective (mostly jazz, bow for practice).

Marcus, do you still have yours on?

On my bass it works really nicely. In terms of pizz, its elasticity gives it a good mix between punch and growl (definitely more punch) that I've heard on other basses of much higher quality strung with, say, spiros. For both pizz and arco the oliv is warmer, rounder and sweeter sounding, without sacrificing clarity and responsiveness (feels good under the bow).
