Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part II

Haven't changed my strings for about a year and a half now - I just put these Evah strings on and was totally happy with them. They last such a long time - amazing.

But, I think I think they're finally at the end of their life.

I see there are two different version now - weich and mittel. Could someone tell me which would be the same as the original version (which didn't have any guage option). I've had a quick search but couldn't see anything.

The EP "regulars" or mittels are the originals. FWIW, most who've tried both seem to prefer the weichs. They are hardly "weich" when compared to other strings. I find the name somewhat misleading.

How is everyone doing with these strings as far as longevity goes? I've had mine on since the end of last May, and they seem to still be doing fine. I read the Obligatos didn't last all that long, so I was hoping that the EPs would remedy that. At about $200 a set, I can't afford to replace them every 6 months... I need 'em to last at least a year to justify buying another set when these go!

I have two sets of Obligatos. I've had the first one for a few years now, and I bought a second one as back up. I got the second one used here on Talkbass. I have tried them on a few basses, and yes, the sound have changed, but to my ears they still sound good. I also got a set of EP's that were used for over a year, and again, put them on my bass. Nothing wrong with them. They sound great.
I guess I am just cheap. I will use a set of strings until I absolutely have to change them!

Hello friends ...
I've been in indecision and needed your opinion.
I've used Spirocore Solo, but not like the scratchy sound. I changed to Evah Pirazzi Solo and loved the beautiful sound, warm and full ... But sometimes they seem to be odd and the sound does not seem to understand well, lack of brightness, but other times no longer! I know it seems strange but it's the perception I have. I'm playing with them for about 5 months.
They think they lose much volume compared with Spirocore Solo? I don't have Spirocore now to compare :( .

P.S.. I'm the only classical player.

This is one of the normal reactions to Evah Pirazzis. I used the regulars for about 8 months and could never decide how I felt about them. Definitely differently at different times.

If you are a classical player and like solo strings, the Flexicores are supposed to be very good. There have even been a few jazz players who have used them. Just a thought.

I know the ropes Flexocores are good for classical, but I want more sound. I use strings Solo, because I have to use the two tunings, orchestra and solo. I thought about Original Flat-Chrome or Permanent, but I fear they are hard and less sound than the Evah Pirazzi Solo.

Right now am trying Belcanto Solo, but I feel that the strings B and F are weak, especially F. These because they are thinner, perhaps less than the Evah tired, a little more shine, but sweet and hot ... I don't know...

Well, I would like your opinion between Evah Pirazzi Solo vs Original Flat-Chrome Solo and Permanent vs Original Flat-Chrome Solo.

I've had Evahs on a new bass that Im getting set up. These strings were put on new about 4/5 weeks ago. My luthier tells me that due to wear and unravelling at the nut, the G string will have to be replaced, and all the strings are showing some degree of wear at the bridge and nut. Anyone else notice this or should I be sending these strings back??

I suspect the nut and bridge grooves may need attention. They should be slightly wider than the string. The nut groove should make a gentle curve into the pegbox to minimize a hard bend in the string at that point. I like the bridge groove to be slightly rounded as well with the same aim in mind.
Unfortunately, I experienced similar problems with Obligatos years ago and learned a valuable lesson. Evahs have a repuation for high quality so I doubt the string is at fault but it is possible.

I am on my second set of Evahs (the regular or originals). I had the first set on for about a year and a half, and really probably could have left them on there for longer.

In both cases I have had no issues with any kind of wear, or unravelling.

I do play and retune every day, and when I readjust my bridge I detune, but I have never actually removed them and remounted them.

I've recently traded for a used set of EPs and I love them. I would like to get a new set at some point but I'm a newbie and don't know the difference between weich and regulars. I'm practicing arco a lot but don't play it much live. Which is better for arco, weich or regulars? thanks.

They are both excellent arco strings. I prefer the weich set overall myself.

I've used both the regulars and the weichs. Granted, I don't do much arco but I didn't notice that one was better than the other in terms of arco response. I greatly prefer the weichs overall. For me and others, the weichs are more of what one expects in a "mittel" than are the regulars.
