Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part II

Agree on the above points on evahs, esp on them producing a a P-bass like pizzicato sound. They are very bassy, but also squishy, and flexible. You can dig in a lot and get a nice powerful sound like you would from gut strings.

For arco, I do like them but not as much as I had hoped I would. They are a lot easier to bow than helicore hybrid strings, but they can't compete with flexocors for purity or darkness. I was hoping they would take me in that direction as I do mostly arco work, but no.

So my next set might be something more arco oriented, like belcantos or flexocor originals. I hear permanents are a surprisingly good hybrid string, but might be too bright for me. Thoughts?

Surprisingly good balanced set, arco oriented, but with a nice warm pizz tone on the upper string, with some growl in the low register.

Well after speaking with the guys over at Upton my new bass will be strung with Evah Pirazzi Weich strings.

I was told by the people at Upton that the EP weichs have good projection, better quality of build than the Obligatos, and would be a good lower tension string for what I want to play. I am fairly new to the upright bass, and I figure after I develop as a player then I can try different strings more objectively. Jack at Upton seemed to agree with my logic, and thought these strings would be a good choice for the styles of music I would like to play. I play blues, swing, while aspiring to play jazz ( I love big band music). I do not use a bow except for intonation practice and reading classical music at home.

After taking a break from the Evah weinch's in favor of some innovation super silvers for the past few months i played a gig with the evahs tonight. I love these strings! Sounded great and are easy on my tendons. I have to quit straying from things that work for me. Although the super silvers are good strings in the own way they are not as fun to play on for me in my bluegrass band as the evahs. The super silvers are alot bassier amplified but not as clear and don't do that Evah thing i like so much. Glad to be back to them!

I've been working hard with the evah pirazzi regulars and am starting to change my mind about them. While they're more difficult to start with the bow than flexocors, they have much more volume and are just bassier! They have lots of string 'catch' - you can wiggle the strings with just a bit of bow pressure - and the E string makes a terrific 'ripping' sound when you dig in. Very powerful strings indeed!!

However the tension IS a bit high, just as drurb has commented on extensively, but honestly my helicore hybrids were worse. Certainly I will give weichs a try when these die.

The best part about evah regulars has to be that at any moment you can unleash an absolutely thunderous attack either with the bow or pizz. I think they are perfect for new, bright basses - just like my Shen SB180. I've ordered a revolution solo pickup for delivery and hopefully will get good results under amplification...if I need it at all!!

I spoke with my teacher yesterday, and he did not know anything about these strings, but he recommended that because I am new to the upright bass I should consider Spirocore weichs on the A, D, and G strings with a Srirocore mittel E string. I then called Gary at Upton, and he recommended the Spirocores for me also. I changed my order to Spiriocores yesterday.

Hmm... your teacher didn't know about Evah weichs but...

I don't think that's a bad choice - the Spiro Weichs are the standard jazz bass string, and time spent with them will give you a solid reference point for judging all other strings.

They'll also make you work just a little harder to get good tone, which will be good for your technique (if not immediately good for your sound ).

On the other hand I think Evah Weichs were probably just as good a choice, with a little more instant gratification as far as tone and volume are concerned.

It's a tough life - so many great strings to try, and so little time and budget!

Well, maybe it's a West Coast thing (we've all gotten soft from sitting around all day in the sun ) but I can't remember when I last saw someone playing a full set of Mittels.

There are a few who are playing on something extreme, like big ol' fat plain guts, but it seems that whenever I go to complement someone on their sound at a gig I find they're using Weichs. Often with a Mittel E.

My main bass is boomy and the Weich E is fine on it - my spare, cheaper bass seems to benefit from the Mittel E, although at the moment it has Evahs on it and sounds great!

I tried to go with some spiro mittles but the tension on my bass really caused my tendon to ache which led to some sloppy playing. I was really surprised to see drub able to play on those coming back from a injury. I guess different basses different results. I play a upton hybrid and the Evah weinch's and regulars worked really good for the sound i was going for. I play in a bluegrass band and don't do arco.
