Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part II

Haha I know, but some people said they didn't feel a huge difference in the strings. I did.

If you're okay with Spiro reds, you should feel at home on EP Weichs. They felt really similar to Mittels on my bass.

OK, so here's another question:

I've got D'Adarrio Helicore Medium Hybrids on my bass - will Evah Pirazzi's feel about the same or heavier or lighter? I'm trying to decide if I should go with the Weich's or not - I don't mind the feel of my current strings - a little lighter would be OK, not sure if I'd be OK with a lot lighter.

The Weichs will probably feel about the same after some aging. The Regulars are heavier than the Helis.

This is all subjective, and is very bass dependent. So take what anyone reports with a grain of salt, IMO.

My last string change was from Helicore Hybrid Mediums to Evah Weichs. I didn't notice any big change in the way they felt under the left hand, but the Evahs are noticeably more bow-friendly.

my impressions are pretty much unchanged

they are loud and dark, but if you know how to control spiros or spiro starks, you will move more air than with the Evahs. They are a good monday morning string.

pizz with the Evahs is the loudest and best quality pizz sound I have ever heard, on all four strings

I am trying a used set of Evahs I bought. I have previously used Spiros, Spiros stark, and Dominants.

The Evahs are much darker, nice pizz, easy arco, pretty loud but they are not screamers.

I need to let them settle and get used to playing them, but my first impression is that the E string is a bit on the weak side comparatively to the other strings of the set.

They don't seem to have the sheer brute force of the spiro starks, but they are more civilized at low volumes, easier to control. I am not sure yet if I like the trade-off. I miss the huge amounts of air moved by the spiros.

The pizz strikes me as simply outstanding, including the E string: loud, punchy but dry. If you want sustain and "twang" this is not the string for you. For orchestra the pizz is MUCH better than all the Thomastiks I have been using.

If my impressions change I shall post again.

Just strung up with Evah Mittel this afternoon. They are going to have to come back off. They are really stiff on my bass. Sound is nice, but not nice enough for the agility trade off. Obligatos, and maybe Spiro Weich, seem to be my string for now when I am doing orch. and jazz gigs. The sound is good and loud, the strings are soft, etc.

You might try Eva Weich, they sound great but with less stiffness. They bow well and project great with pizz. You could also try the olive g and or the olive d with weich bottoms,a good combination also.

Does anyone know exact tensions of EPs?or does anyone have an opinion on how the tension of EP regulars compares to tension/gauge of Obligatos?

It's not just a matter of tension.
Different construction means different elasticity.
It's the combination of tension and elasticity that produces the stiffness.
Tension alone doesn't mean much when you compare two different strings which are not the same brand.

How much sustain are people getting at the end of the fingerboard with these strings? With the regulars I can get a really loud, thick sound either bowed or pizz'd, but there is little sustain. Weichs were hardly any different, although they were quieter and easier to play. Belcantos really amazed me - they had a lot of ring and sustain even at the highest notes. Is this everyone else's experience?

Perhaps this is simply a general difference between synthetic and metal core strings. Thoughts?

I've used both Belcantos and Evah weichs, although on different basses. On my carved Romanian, the Belcantos were weak and monochromatic. On my Epiphone the Evahs have the sustain and voice I'm looking for in that instrument and am considering them for my carved bass, too.

Give'em a try. I have the weichs on a newer carved bass with Oliv G and this set up sounds great both pizz/arco. A group I am in has been doing some recording so this has recently just re-affirmed what I thought I have been hearing with these strings. I went with these b/c of the good arco reviewsand b/c I did have obligatos on an epiphone and loved that combination as well.

I had the regulars on my Romanian Wultur for a year, made my bass louder and more powerful, loved everything but the longevity of them. I wore them out in a year. but I played in two orchestras, a jazz band, and a swing band, so i guess I got my money out of it.
