Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part II

Things are not quite adding up. The 4491 part number says the string is definitely a Pirastro Evah Pirazzi. They come in three gauges: Standard, Light (Weich), and Solo.

But as Jake deV said, If it is an EP G, it should have light green silking with a black spiral at the tailpiece end, regardless of gauge. If it's a Standard, it should have dark brown silking at the peg end. If it is a Weich, the peg end should be dark brown with an additional rose-colored ring. That may be missing if the strings have been cut. If it's a Solo A, it should have light gray silking at the peg end. So the tan silking sounds peculiar. Are you sure that string came out of that package? I've never seen any Pirastro bass string with tan silking.

If it's any help, the EP Weich G measures .057" (1.45 mm) in diameter under tension.

Guys, quick question for those who have tried soft and regular gauge.

Is the difference in gauge, Feel, thickness, really noticeable between both gauges?

I ask because I think my bass likes lighter gauges strings. It responds more openly, but I am wondering if it's worth the investment.
I have tried many strings, I do like these strings a lot. So I am not looking for any other brand, etc. I guess, the question is will my bass like them even more?

Dark brown, tan - I'm color insensitive and color ignorant, according to my wife. It doesn't say "Standard" or "Light" or "Solo" anywhere on the package, which is why I'm confused. Probably safe to assume it's standard - maybe they don't put that on the package.

FWIW: Strung my EPs on the Yamaha Silent Bass last night. Not bad. Might the best EUB string out there. The darkness helps a ton and it doesn't sound so twangy. The fast decay is also a boon. Hope it doesn't get any tighter.

I am trying a used set of Evahs I bought. I have previously used Spiros, Spiros stark, and Dominants.

The Evahs are much darker, nice pizz, easy arco, pretty loud but they are not screamers.

I need to let them settle and get used to playing them, but my first impression is that the E string is a bit on the weak side comparatively to the other strings of the set.

They don't seem to have the sheer brute force of the spiro starks, but they are more civilized at low volumes, easier to control. I am not sure yet if I like the trade-off. I miss the huge amounts of air moved by the spiros.

The pizz strikes me as simply outstanding, including the E string: loud, punchy but dry. If you want sustain and "twang" this is not the string for you. For orchestra the pizz is MUCH better than all the Thomastiks I have been using.

If my impressions change I shall post again.

These have been my favorite string for a few years now, mainly for classical playing but on a bass which I use for jazz and in amplified settings, too.

I've been using the regular gauge, but just ordered a set of weichs, as I'd like to see how the bass responds with different tension.

To me, they are the best compromise out there at this price point - a little gutty, a little growl when you need it, good volume and focus, and very arco friendly. Oh, and durable, to boot.

I'll report back on the weichs after I get them on.

This thread has inspired me to try out the weichs.. there goes more money. :hiding:

I've been using the regulars for about a year. They're a bit hard on the left hand but they made my bass sound the exact way I wished it sounded. We'll see if I still get that satisfaction out of the weichs.

I just switched and didn't hear a big difference, but less fatigue on the left hand.

Hate to chime in so early, but I just couldn't resist.

I just made the switch from the EP regulars to the weichs. Here are my initial thoughts:

The strings definitely feel thinner. Noticeably thinner. The tone almost sounds slightly thinner but it's still ballsy like the regulars. They're much more comfortable to play on the left hand.

I wish they had the thick feeling of the regulars but I guess that's what I hated in the first place.. but I liked the feel. A love/hate relationship.
