Ever get a bad string?

Over the weekend I put a new set of strings on my bass. The G string just couldn't be intonated. I had the saddle moved as far forward as possible, and it was still 8 cents flat. I emailed the manufacturer on Sunday and they responded on Monday and said they put a new string in the mail. Note that I didn't even request one, just wanted to provide some feedback that there was an issue.

Today the new string arrived. I installed it, set the intonation. No problem at all. Outstanding customer service. StringJoy has a new fan. I'll be buying my next set from them for sure.

Have you ever had a bad string right out of the package? I've been playing over 40 years and this was a first for me.

I’ve played since 1984. I didn’t run into a bad string until 2000. I then didn’t run into another until 2020. Since then I’ve probably come across about a half dozen bad E strings on a number of basses (?) I chalk it up to makers having trouble due to the pandemic.
That checks out. I've always had good strings from old stock packs. The only defective string I got was from a pack of Labella RX steels and it was one of the newer ones. Jerks said they would send me a replacement string but never got around to it though. Lol I'm glad stringjoy took care of you on that one.

I don't recall that happening to me but I'm sure it is possible with any manufactured product.

That said, every experience i have had with Stringjoy has been fantastic and I don't mind a bit paying a couple bucks more for their guitar strings because they feel great and seem to last a couple weeks longer with my use and they settle in super fast so I don't have to retune as often. I have never used their bass strings but would be wiling to try next time I need rounds.

I got a set of D’Addario Chromes last fall that had a dead G. I emailed the company and they sent me a new one quickly.

StringJoy is a local company here in Nashville down on Elm Hill Pike, in Gibson's factory neighborhood. I need to stick my head in the door soon. Glad they resolved this effortlessly, so many companies just don't get it.

One bad string straight out of the bag? Never happened to me, but I've heard of it.

when i was a kid 100 years ago, i saved my lawn mowing money to buy a set of rotosounds because that's what geddy played. i put them on, and not only did i not sound like geddy, but the e sounded terrible, even to my inexperienced ears. i took my bass to the shop, the guy behind the counter listened to it, agreed it sucked, and ran his thumb and forefinger down the length of the string. he stopped near the bridge, wiggled the string around, and said the core was broken. he gave me a new string. hasn't happened to me since.

Unfortunately I'm dealing with a dead string right now. Got myself a really expensive set imported from Italy (like, more expensive than TIs), and the E string is done for. The rest of the set, exactly what I was looking for. But now there's a big gaping hole in the set.

Wrote the manufacturer last week, they've been ghosting me since.
Well I'm going to guess markbass and say I hope they get you all fixed up with strings. For the money we shell out for our strings you shouldn't have to be hounding them to throw in extras when there's an issue. Nobody out there can make perfectly consistent strings every time and that's why as a company you have to be ready to fix your mistakes. Don't ghost your customers, own it and make it right. I had an experience with a complete defect in a set of strings (not markbass but Labella actually) and I gave a very cordial and non aggressive email asking for some help with a replacement. They said they would have it and gave me all the lip service and it never got to me. I would hope in your case they don't do like was done to me and you at least have a backup set of strings you can use.

I had few bad strings with DR strings and it was not only my case.
And yes it can happen sometimes, some strings are not winded up correctly and/or it can be the saddle hole.

The strings tends to move inside the saddle hole that create undesired harmonics.

Or sometimes it can be the correlation between the string and bass vibrations that can create an harmonic too close to the desired frequency tuning causing an impossibility to tune.
Most of the time on fat strings.

Major recurrent issues with Dunlop SuperBrights...exactly as you've described.

I've had three.
1. Optima Flatwound string broke during installation (where I'm not 100% sure if it was my fault) I sent them an email explaining what happened and asking if it was my fault or the strings, they did not care and sent me a replacement.
2. Same as the OP's problem - one string in the pack (elixir) would not intonate. I got a new string and it was fine.
3. On my Kala U-bass I could not get the string to intonate. Kala went out of their way to get this fixed, sent me a complete pack of strings and a new bridge to make it work. I had to pay $10 import fee because they sent it with UPS express from halfway across the planet and the shipping cost alone was $40.

Having a bad string never was a problem (in the long run) and I've had nothing but good experiences with the respective customer support people.

Yup. I will never buy another pack of SIT strings.

I tried a pack of Markbass strings once, bad D. They immediately responded to my email, and sent a redemption pack very soon after. Had a dud E in a pack of SIT silencers. Took them 3 months to finally respond after multiple emails. Another 3 weeks to send a redemption pack. Strung it up, and the E was a dud. I will never buy another pack of their strings.
