Two instances come to mind.
1) A set of F-bass exposed cores that had a low-B string that was buzzing/rattling - sounded like the topmost winding was not properly attached. Mentioned this to the seller (local online music shop) - who were incredulous. Sent them the weird string, and they confirmed that it indeed it was damaged; the replacement was perfectly fine.
2) SIT 'power-something' (powerwound nickel, or powersteels?) in their heaviest gauge. Was experimenting with extreme downtuning on a 4-string, but on opening the packet, noticed that 3 of the strings were rusty.
Took them back to the shop - got a replacemet pack, which i had the good sense to open immediately. They were rusty too. As was the third packet. That was all the sets they had in that gauge, so I got a refund. Among the 3 packs, we could not find a non-rusted set of 4 strings in total. Did not inspire massive confidence in SIT packaging - but it may have gotten better since?
