After the first few bars I began gagging. No way would I play it. Put it on an mp3 player and play it through the PA when the band is on break and outside where they can't hear it.

Ever hate a song so much you'd risk being fired?

Just assembled a quick trio for a client's community crab feast. We had one 3 hour rehearsal for a 4 hour gig this Saturday. About a dozen of the songs make me ill, but I'm a whore and it's good pay. Also, the reality is I can enjoy PLAYING just about any song. It's being the listener that is rough.

I always keep in mind that things could be worse. Keeps the complaining to a minimum.

I'm a self proclaimed musical whore. I will play anything for a buck. That being said I can live with playing music I hate from time to time because my worst day playing is better than my best day doing anything else.
If money was important I wouldn't be a musician. Sounds weird but I'm cool playing music I hate because I love music and couldn't imagine making a living doing anything else.
This is interesting to me because this is why I don't want playing music I don't like to be my livelihood. I was always afraid that if gigging for money started to feel like a job I wouldn't want to touch my instruments when it came time to do it creatively. Plus I believe everything a musician plays will influence their playing, and no way do I want some of that stuff influencing me in any way.
Thats what a day job is for.... so you dont have to play music you hate. I'm pretty open minded about music in general but there are limits to what I'll do musically, surely wouldnt do the offending song in question nor will I ever play "gimme three steps" or most anything else by Lynrd Skynrd for that matter, there are a couple exceptions but only a few. No matter how hard I might pretend, I cant pull off being a redneck rock n roller, so I dont even try. My philosopy is, if it dont make you smile why waste your time. Life is short, dont play crappy music.
Yep - sometimes I feel like I made a mistake working for corporate America, but the money I make doing that far exceeds anything I could make as a gigging musician and allows me to buy gear I might not have been able to otherwise. And the best part is everything I play is enjoyable.

Sweet Caroline. We do have this one on our set list. It's one where I willingly take one for the team and play something I don't like because the audience does.

I just got in from a gig where I can honestly say I didn't care for probably half the songs we did... and I had a ball. Playing with friends of mine, it was easy.

Yes, we eat crabs and leave with the leftovers. A BUNCH if they don't eat much.

This. The right players, the right chemistry, good time no matter what. It's who you play with, not so much what you play. IMO.

There are a lot of songs that I really hate to play, but I can play anything as long as the crowd likes it and the women dance. Mustang Sally comes to mind.

Threads like this are the reason I'm so happy to play in an original symphonic metal act. I'm fairly certain that if anyone asked us to cover that horrid song (I made it about 15 seconds in, couldn't take it any more) it would be a race amongst the entire band to beat that person within an inch of their life .
Sorry but I'm not gonna play music that I hate that much.

I understand where you are coming from. I had to learn Achy Breaky Heart and Boot Scootin' Boogie......two songs, as someone said earlier, made me want to punch kittens. But the audience loves them and I like getting paid. So........
I still am winning the battle over playing anything by Bruce Springteen, but I fear the winds are changing as there have been rumblings from the singer to add a couple tunes from him.... god help me.
