Ever needed the toilet during a show?

Well, have you even been bursting to go during a show?

Earlier this year. :(

I made the BIG mistake of having the $6 crab cake special at a club we were playing. I got hit with such a bad case of diarrhea I got the band to end the set 10 minutes early so I could use the rest room. Thank goddess the stall wasn't occupied.

The sad thing is, some guy was puking into a urinal at the same time I was doing my smelly thing in the stall. Essentially, we created the Worst Bathroom in Maryland.

Fortunately I felt better when I was done. I doubt the same was true for the other guy.

I go to the toilet before we play... i've never felt desperate to go during a performance, I think maybe because the adrenaline kicks in and concentrates your attention on what you have to do on stage...

i've often wondered why I've never had to stop a gig to go to the loo :)

i'm playing tonight, maybe it'll happen :bassist:

Actually, on this point - I've never seen any of the big bands' members disappearing for a p*ss midway through a two/three hour set - the big arena guys - Rolling Stones/U2 etc. Is there a special set of underwear manufactured "Just For The Professional Musician" that allows them "do it" there and then without the knowledge of any of their adoring fans? :hyper:

I worked the crew for a Yes tour many years ago. Steve Howe hadn't been feeling too good, but the show must go on. So towards the of the show in one of Steve's solo silence. Claude Steve's tech jumps to action and checking all the gear out then you hear Steve again. About a minute later Steve stops and tilts his head back. Claude is looking at him like what's going on. Steve shakes his head and starts playing again and no more silence the rest of the show. Claude figure's out what happened, Steve crapped his pants, but kept the show going. It gets around the crew pretty fast what happened. After showering and changing Steve's heading to the limo. Claude makes a comment about what happened, and Steve is not amused. He just looks at Claude and say after you pack my gear, get my pants to the dry cleaners. Suddenly wasn't so funny to Claude.

So it even happens to the big boys.

On a slightly off-topic, I remember trying back in 1993 to do an Adam Clayton and smoke on stage while playing (before they banned it!!). Within 30 seconds into the first song, the smoke was wafting right into my eyes, and the guitarist brother had to do a quick recovery for me while hopping up on stage, took the cigarette out of my mouth hopped back into the audience and smoked it himself. From trying to looking cool to looking like I was crying - hardly a good career move. If Mr. Clayton's reading this - how do you do it?

i read somewhere that once slash was smoking at a show, and he wasnt wearing a shirt...he dropped the cig and it landed on the edge of his pants up against his lower belly and he didnt stop to move it...i dont know about you all but if theres a flame that close to my crotch, im GOING to stop playing to move it.

Many years ago I saw the New Riders Of The Purple Sage at a theater in the round called Painters Mill, in Maryland. This place had a variable-speed rotating stage. Well, first of all they had to slow the rotation down until the stage was just barely inching along. Evidently the band was so "relaxed" that they couldn't take the usual speed of spin! Then about 45 minutes along, they stopped playing and a roadie appeared onstage to lead Buddy Cage, the pedal steel player, off to the can. Lead singer John Dawson made some remark about Buddy's weak kidneys, and they started up the next tune. Eventually Buddy reappeared and continued to play.

Thank god that has never happened to me , but it happend once in a Calculus exam .. I just ran out of the classroom and dashed to the toilet :D

Same thing happened to me in one of my Calc finals in college. What was bad is they had a rule, if you left, you coulden't come back. Luckally it was near the end of the 3 hour final and I just rushed through the last 2-3 questions real quick.

I never seem to eat much more than a sandwich before a gig, so usually my stomach is aching becuase I haven't eaten more than having to go to the toilet. Though I tend to carry some Immodium AD or some Pepto (pill form) with me just in case.

Funny - I saw this happen to Rob Thomas during a show this summer. He stopped about 1/3rd of the way through his set and set he needed to be honest with us in that he needed to go to the bathroom. Said it was the first time that ever happened to him on stage. He called one of his band members up to play one of their originals while he was gone. Told him, "Whatever you do, don't f--- up and don't do better than me..." He came back halfway through the song and jumped in on percussion, which was killer.

Oddly enough I was disappointed with the show up until that point - afterward things really geared up and it turned out to be a fantastic concert...

I once drank a pot of tea before our set, then a couple of beers during, and my bladder got to breaking point right before our last song, which is Sly & The Family Stone's "Higher" - the Woodstock version, where we all take a solo, and it goes on for 10-15 mins.

So I just yelled at the band "cover for me!" and ran off, I managed to get back in about 1 minute, while the band played a wee country jam, so everyone's attention was diverted to the trombone!

Our singer's had to run off for a leak too, but that's fine, we can jam. He bought a beer on the way back so it looked like that's the reason he left the stage!
