I wish that was the case but it isn’t. I’m warning you not to try one out or you’ll end up with “the shiny new toy”. They’re just that good.
The WD800us a great amp and one of my favorites, but I can’t see keeping something I’m not going to play.

PS: You are correct about it being a great time to pickup a WD800! I know if I was looking for a Mesa that’s what I’d do.

But I did buy the new head. Since it’s way too soon I am not even thinking about the new head replacing the WD800 since I cant imagine anything being better..but I am looking forward to hearing the new head in a band setting with my basses and cabs.

There are plenty of players that will find the WD to be a better choice for their own needs and tastes. Neither one is better, just different.

The voicing, the tube output stage emulation, the damping factor tracking.

The WD was modeled after the Walkabout, which used a MOSFET output stage, the BD-800 was modeled after the Bass 400+ which used a tube output stage.

Different feel mostly, and there's a little more compression in the MOSFET models.

al due respect to Mesa and the old horse himself, but I am not going to be selling my WD800. I continue to love my Walkabout and, by extension, my WD800. These amps are exactly the sound I want from a bass amp. I was never a major fan of the Bass 400/400+ amps, but I am definitely a fan of the Walkabout/WD800.

Having said that, I continue to be impressed by Mesa's bass amp development and their commitment to great products that fit different needs for a wide range of bass needs. Plus AH's commitment to TB and our input into making amps that work so well for so many ... very cool!

Always happens when the new amp is released. Then in six months or so, some will realize the new one isn’t their thing and the 800Ds will start showing up in the classifieds. The circle of life.

I know I’d use the EQ of the WD-800. My D-800+ is very good.
I’d swap mine and force the WD to fit in my 4 space SKB - with the mods needed.

Good question. This amp goes more after the rock and metal tones, BUT that's a much wider palette than you might think. I started with the Bass 400+ as a baseline and then adjusted per the requests and comments that players here wanted to see added (or subtracted) from the Bass 400+, which resulted in the new amp. It's actually MUCH more versatile than you (and I) would think, but from a slightly different perspective than the WD and TT which are both more versatile but in practice just more "different than different"

They can all get into each other's neighborhoods, but they get you there in different ways.
