Everything fine with my MM Stingray?

Hi. Can you please have a look on my Stingray? It's from 1995, but never seen a similar one for sale. I mean the neck looks different from what i found searching through old ads. Is it okey, or something is wrong with it? Thanks

Yup it's just typically dirty neck when people don't do proper maintenance or add some sort of finish on it. Yuck.

You'd have to do some light sanding in order to clean it up.

That's why I added like 10 coats of Tru Oil on my Stingray necks. They won't get dirty like that and they're protected:

You don't have to do 10 coats obviously, a coat or two would already make a difference.

Since when does hand grime stop with a straight, even line on the back of neck?

And why is there an unstained oval shaped area around the 3rd and fifth fret dots?

That straight line is a factory boarder from a finished headstock to the gun-oiled shaft. The headstock won’t absorb dirt like the shaft does.

To me, I think the neck is just Chock Full ‘O Mojo.
…or maybe the previous owner was a Diesel mechanic and played at work…

I spent some time as a diesel mechanic, I doubt they had time to finish thier work let alone noodle around lol

That hard line is not grime. My 2000 model has that same line.

edit: sorry quoted the reply instead of the original comment about the line. Also mwbass photos also show that same line. That's something in the factory finish.

So I have a recently acquired 2000 model with this line and I was wondering about it. If this line is present does it mean the neck is unfinished and I should consider some tru-oil or something?
The headstock is varnished. The neck is finished with oil. There's a distinct line between the two.

You could clean it up with a little brillo, and rubbing alcohol. Looks like a killer neck, if it wasn't so grimy. Try rubbing alcohol and a few rags. Then take some 0000 steel wool to the back. Don't use the brillo on the fingerboard. Just the back. I mean, you can. But, I wouldn't. I'd just clean the front as good as I could with the alcohol.
